the most common thing you see people on blooski skeet about mastodon is how it’s boring/not fun/slow and I think what people mean is they didn’t get enough click bait dopamine in the first three minutes of use and/or their influencers weren’t here so it was too hard to parse what was cool and funny

franktaber,
@franktaber@mas.to avatar

@seachanger I am happy to ignore it. I do not need another site or service to check. I created a filter for all other social media sites and only saw your post on this because of how you spelled it!

franktaber,
@franktaber@mas.to avatar

@seachanger No problem at all. I pay attention for a day or two when there is new social media drama and then it goes into my filters list. I realized that the reason I like the fediverse better is mostly because of my own use of filters and muting features and not just because of the network. Elsewhere I rarely filtered or muted or blocked even when it was warranted almost daily.

    Let me be frank about my account and what I post: I generally keep my account to my photography. But I am not a "brand". This is my account. I'm a person, not a photo bot.

    I do not appreciate "suggestions" about how/what to post. I'm not rude enough to tell any other accounts what/how to post and I'm not going to be polite when people act that way towards me.

    If that is an issue & you choose to unfollow, so be it. But if you tell me what to post I'm going to tell you to f*** off

    franktaber,
    @franktaber@mas.to avatar

    @AbandonedAmerica use the mute button here frequently because it is so easy and because I know that there will be no algorithm indirectly feeding me drama and trolling from people who are addicted to drama and trolling. The 7 day feature is useful for a first time someone is making noise and after that I use indefinite.

    When the MTA announced discontinuing their live subway alerts due to Twitter's new excessive pricing policy, I took it as an opportunity to set up @mtaupdates.

    And here's how I made it.

    @stefan @mtaupdates I am wondering if it is different from what @ai6yr set up. Though for people who are in NYC maybe it is better to have two sources for it to be more reliable.

    franktaber,
    @franktaber@mas.to avatar

    @stefan @mtaupdates @ai6yr Great to hear that and I do not mean to come across as discouraging this. I think this is the right place for public information because it is open and not controlled by any one company.

    I have now heard from several people that they got COVID at . Apparently, it was a semi-super-spreader event.

    People don't seem to mention this as much any more, It is as if getting COVID is expected. That's not a good expectation, especially considering the longer-term damage it can wreak on the neurological and cardio systems.

    So far, @drpattie and I are COVID-free. We didn't see very many people with masks -- less than 1% but we wore them.

    Best wishes for recovery to those infected.

    franktaber,
    @franktaber@mas.to avatar

    @spaf @drpattie There are probably many people at a security conference who take quite extreme measures to protect their computers from tail risk. What does it say about their risk assessment abilities that they do no do the same for their own health and that of those around them?

    A lot of people don't know the difference between capitalism and ... having markets and shopping and little coops and companies in non-super-essential economic sectors that operate independently.

    Markets existed before capitalism and will exist after.

    franktaber,
    @franktaber@mas.to avatar

    @futurebird @escarpment @ceoln I really like mutual aid that starts without money changing hands if at all possible. I know sometimes money is the only thing that can get the job done in the world we live in. But mutual aid that is help of one's time or something one can make or grow or fix can enrich relationships and communities far more than money can. It is harder to control and isolate people who are connected and resilient through nonmonetary mutual aid.

    Several years ago Jevin West and I noted that the risk of deep fake videos of was not only that people could be represented as saying things they actually didn’t, but also that they could deny saying things that they actually did.

    @ct_bergstrom This is the approach taken by many authoritarian countries where they want people to believe in nothing and so corruption can run rampant among the powerful while propaganda floods the airwaves with nonsense that nobody believes but poisons communication and the ability to mount honest change.

    Bluesky absolutely nailed it by targeting the FOMO that runs right through the tech industry.

    You could put “invite required” on a cheese sandwich and developers would be selling their grandmothers for access to it. 🙄

    franktaber,
    @franktaber@mas.to avatar

    @thomasfuchs @dibi58 @whalecoiner The nature of the distinct Mastodon and Fediverse communities is the real difference and why I have no interest in BlueSky. There is something organic and real about the weirdness of beige.party and sauropods.win and normal about infosec.exchange and journa.host and real about mastodon.art. Each of those communities makes sense and has an identity that while fluid represents real user preferences in a way BlueSky would need a few years to replicate.

    franktaber,
    @franktaber@mas.to avatar

    @thomasfuchs @dibi58 @whalecoiner Related to that is the realization that social network companies are providing almost no value. They may even be providing negative value in many cases. The value is from what people put into it. Their thoughts and interactions and pictures and more. The distinct flavor of the different instances is a strength of the Fediverse that cannot be replicated by a single company unless it loosens its grip so much that it ceases to be in charge of anything.

    For all the people saying 'Why are you still on twitter" I have two responses:

    🔹 Before you ask someone that, you might want to look to see what the person is doing on Twitter.

    I am telling people why they should leave and posting links to Mastodon and my blog. I have long-time readers who are still there.

    🔹 I see people here accusing others of of being a "nazi supporter" or lacking morals because they have a Twitter account. That is the behavior of a jerk and doesn't make Mastodon look good.

    franktaber,
    @franktaber@mas.to avatar

    @mastodonmigration @Teri_Kanefield They might just decide on a day such as May 1 when they will all jump to Mastodon for at least two weeks. They can do it together and for a limited time to see how it goes. Just takes a few prominent members of that community to start it.

    Every day I see people trying to catch Musk in his own hypocrisy or fact check some authoritarian conservative politician. But they do not care about hypocrisy. It is about power. They are happy to wield power unfairly.

    As the old authoritarian saying goes "For my friends everything, for my enemies the law."

    franktaber, to random
    @franktaber@mas.to avatar

    @NoahH @CassandraZeroCovid @GhostOnTheHalfShell @ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs I do not mean mocking online. Online discussion is useful. Fighting with authoritarians online is pointless. I mean mockery in person. Fighting them physically in person is what they want. It then looks like two equal and violent sides to the apolitical onlooker. Mockery in person weakens them because they have no response to it.

    @laseletzky Disturbing how history repeats:

    "The totalitarian mass leaders ...could make people believe the most fantastic statements one day, and trust that if the next day they were given irrefutable proof of their falsehood, they would take refuge in cynicism; instead of deserting the leaders who had lied to them, they would protest that they had known all along that the statement was a lie and would admire the leaders for their superior tactical cleverness."

    In 2008, a small number of mega banks crashed the global economy.

    From 2015-2022, a small number of mega social media sites crashed global political systems.

    In 2023, we find out even the extreme price of eggs and food is because of record profits of mega egg companies and grocery corporations.

    We need a 1% rule. No company should control more than 1% of any sector. Above that, they have to split into two truly independent companies.
