@jackbrewster@hachyderm.io

I live in WA state. I like gaming with friends and rooting for the Seattle #Thunderbirds. I love to travel with my family. We have cats. I'm a liberal US #Navy #submarine #veteran.

I work in fintech as a mobile app tester. In a past life, I worked on #NetNewsWire and #Kaleidoscope at Black Pixel.

Stupid software makes me grumpy, but I don’t code, so I mostly yell at the clouds on socials when something bugs me.

Other than that, I think their mice are aces.

@bynkii Monty is up to over $2k/mo? Sheesh. I think I was getting $400 when I finished up my benefits. That's a big jump over just the value of a dollar change.

@fahrni My wife has a 7 for work and it's really nice. I'd consider one if I needed a Windows portable, but I'd probably pick a Framework instead for its serviceability.

    This is one of those stories you read and think, “No way this is how that works…” And then go and “do your own research” and find out…HOLY SHIT! This is how those things work! 😳

    “How does a plane's oxygen mask work?”

    https://yml.me/oxygenmask

    jackbrewster,
    @jackbrewster@hachyderm.io avatar

    @KingShawn Huh. We had something similar as portable emergency breathing equipment on US navy ships (including subs, like I was on). After pulling the start string, you tap it on your mask to confirm the pin came out to start the reaction. There would also be a bit of smoke in the mask at first.The canisters get ridiculously hot and have to be ejected (really just dropped) from the rig because they couldn't be safely handled for awhile.

    Lazy: Does there exist an iOS entitlement that lets apps programmatically control VoiceOver? We want to allow buyers in the Square checkout flow to enable VoiceOver without having to go to Settings.app.

    jackbrewster,
    @jackbrewster@hachyderm.io avatar

    @kyleve Would something like the home/wake button shortcut (Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut) work for on demand switching? Still needs to be setup per device, but once it’s done, it would always be available. I use the shortcut on my test devices and find it very handy.

    March 31 was already significant to me because that's the day in 1998 when I helped #Netscape Navigator become #OpenSource.

    Now this day has a whole new meaning for me as a #transgender woman. And it's my first #TransDayOfVisibility that I celebrate publicly since coming out to everyone on June 21 of last year.

    To all my #trans siblings, I see you. Even if complete visibility isn't possible for you right now. You still matter. You're still loved. And you're still trans. Never doubt that. 🏳️‍⚧️🫂💖

    How is Mastodon working for creators? Well, this particular creator thinks it’s going quite well! My Kickstarter campaign that finished out yesterday at nearly $170K had about 9% tracked from Mastodon, and it’s possible it was twice that when figuring some browsers/firewalls suppress referrals and adding people who signed up for my announcement email list by hearing about it on Mastodon. This chart shows all tracked social media, 17.5% by dollar volume of the total, broken down by site.

    @glennf I know this has nothing to do with the point you're making, but "Discards" is applause-worthy, whether it's intended, or a typo.

    The thing that gets me about the project titan kerfuffle is it shows how unused we are to how much research can cost.

    For a deep project on automotive tech, given the amount of time, the cost is not that weird. Deep research into control systems, user interface systems, security of both, how they’d function in the real world in a variety of platforms across a variety of needs, for over a decade, and some of y’all are acting like that’s spare change.

    jackbrewster,
    @jackbrewster@hachyderm.io avatar

    @bynkii I've seen comments about how Apple "wasted" $10b on the project. That's someone who doesn't get that R&D will always generate new ideas and impact other areas. They're probably close to net neutral on the expense already.

    Hullo Designers and UX practitioners!

    Awhile back on Twitter, I wrote a small thread called "Notes for UI Designers Who Have Lost Their Way". Recently @louie asked if I brought it over here yet.

    Well, here is the original post. I'm hoping it will engender a great discussion as it did on Twitter, as these issues still exist.

    jackbrewster,
    @jackbrewster@hachyderm.io avatar

    @octothorpe @louie You missed "Obvious place to enter search terms that wasn't hidden behind a button."

    These are at the same level as physical controls in cars.

    There's also some irony in that, as screen have gotten bigger, so we have more space for controls, etc., they've been removed/reduced. For aesthetics, I guess? Certainly not usability.

    Question for the audience: I’m gonna spend 2 weeks in the US soon. What’s a good phone provider that I can buy an eSIM from so I’ll have some data?

    I’ve used t-mobile US before and was reasonably happy. Are they okay on the east coast?

    jackbrewster,

    @daniel re: the phone number, from the alosim site: Your aloSIM data plan includes a free international phone number from Hushed that works over Wi-Fi or data. Start with free credits (about 30 calling minutes or 50 texts) and add more if needed.
