Does anyone have a spare Lenovo charger (one of the rectangular proprietary ones) that they can donate to Computers for a Cause? I've had a perfectly good laptop donated without a charger.

mvyrmnd,
@mvyrmnd@aus.social avatar

@decryption yep, that's the one

My old Logitech M720 mouse which I've used for about oh 10 or 12 years wasn't clicking properly. I'd click, it wouldn't register, I couldn't click and drag.

It finally frustrated me enough to get a new one, and I can't believe the difference.

I think I have a high tolerance for poor technology.

But I am at a computer for upwards of 10 hours a day. One small change has made my life measurably better. Why did I not get a new mouse sooner?

Do I procrastinate on making my life better?

mvyrmnd,
@mvyrmnd@aus.social avatar

@KathyReid I've always thought a new keyboard and mouse every now and again makes your computing experience like new.

Back in my old tech support days, on more than a few occasions had people complain their computers were slow, only to discover the mouse button was dying

After a very busy day, our first round of donated items are up on the website and available for purchase via donation. Go and have a look - you never know what you might find!

First workshop day for Computers for a Cause!

Computers for a Cause had this donated yesterday - I've never seen one before, and I'm quite keen to get it up and running!

mvyrmnd,
@mvyrmnd@aus.social avatar

@static Yup. This one might be a challenge - I don't want to run up gear with Windows 10 as it's only got 1 year of support left. I don't want to trick Windows 11 on to any gear for similar support reasons. It's a detachable system, and I have no idea if ChromeOS Flex or Linux will properly support the detachment mechanism.

Computers for a Cause just got donated a printer and I've realised my folly.

also eSIMs are a mistake for your primary phone number - making your phone number beholden to an app?? bad idea, good for burner/travel numbers though

mvyrmnd,
@mvyrmnd@aus.social avatar

@decryption I made that mistake. Never again

All you folk out there eyeballing the new Microsoft ARM PC's - remember that you can always donate your old stuff to http://www.computersforacause.charity 😀

mvyrmnd,
@mvyrmnd@aus.social avatar

@georgeharito That's our prime category - stuff that can be refreshed with Linux Mint, for example.
Happy to take it!

mvyrmnd,
@mvyrmnd@aus.social avatar

@georgeharito Fantastic, thanks! I hope you got a tasty treat while you were there.

Computers for a Cause has existed for 24 hours and already we've collected some amazing donations. The boys and I will set to work cleaning, testing and repairing this gear and you'll see it for sale soon!

If you're in Naarm/Melbourne you can now drop your unwanted IT gear/phones/tablets/consoles to Core Roasters at 14 Barkly Street, Brunswick East (and grab yourself some excellent coffee and pastries while you're there)

Some of you may know that I'm elbow deep in raising money for the Cancer Council via the Shitbox Rally. I've started a new fundraiser called "Computers for a Cause" where my sons and I will take old donated computer equipment, clean it and fill it with FOSS goodness and sell it for a very reasonable price with all money raised being donated to the Cancer Council.

It will keep perfectly serviceable equipment out of landfill, and raise money for a worthy cause.

No one on here will be local to me, but if you have old equipment you'd like to donate, please PM me and we can work something out.

Retoots are very welcome. Thanks all!

Christ on a crutch Microsoft you bloody did not just add random ass widgets to the login screen did you? You did? WTF for? Who asked for this?

mvyrmnd,
@mvyrmnd@aus.social avatar

@decryption @dawnstar @dawnstar Yep. I immediately added regkeys to stop it it to my "Die MS Bullshit" GPO. It's a forever battle.

Ok computer-touches of the fediverse, I’ve had enough of the Windows fucks and will be installing Debian <soon>. Maybe 20 years has been enough for a viable Linux on the desktop, who knows…

So what window manager are the cool kids using these days? Is Enlightenment still a thing? I want to not have fuck with things

mvyrmnd,
@mvyrmnd@aus.social avatar

@jpm I went KDE in January after giving up on Windows. I'm very happy and comfortable.

I need some help. This isn't a call for donations (although you're more than welcome to if you want!). My major fundraising event for the Shitbox Rally this year has fallen through. I need to raise $5000 by October. Any fundraising gurus out there have any ideas they'd be willing to share on how to go about it?
