I woke up screaming in terror last night four times. Drenched in sweat, terrified, crying.

Woke up very suddenly about an hour ago. The dream wasn't terrifying, but was most certainly distressing. I would class it a nightmare for sure.

Unfortunately, this kind of nightmare is easier to recall, and I can't fall back asleep. I tend to fall asleep from the raw screaming ones quickly.

But this one? Probably haunt me for days.

I used to enjoy sleep.

nuintari,

@apgarcia I have no workers, I have PTSD. Incidently living with PTSD fucking sucks, and the near constant nightmares are the tip of the spear.

So no, this was not fucking funny.

Today let's spread the love!

@ someone in the comments who has made your Mastodon experience better, a little explanation as to why would be awesome too! You are welcome to do more than one.

nuintari,

@RickiTarr @jerry is pretty cool, I mean, he runs a massive mastodon server, has kept his sanity somehow, and seems like a super chill, awesome fella.

Airports are showing the signs of .

Areas near gates are losing seating areas, and gaining bars and restaurants. A significant drop in total available seating.

Foot traffic areas are getting crowded full of shops and kiosks selling items at 250% markups while creating significant congestion.

Less of what is actually needed and more of what can extract more cash from travelers.

Anyone know of a way to connect two sets of bluetooth headphones to an android device at the same time? Be nice if Kim and I could watch movies together during our flight.

nuintari's rules of networking 0x13:

Seriously.

NAT is not a firewall.
NAT is not kind of a firewall.
NAT is not like a firewall.
NAT is not sort of a firewall.
NAT is not a firewall.

There is a world of difference between explicitly denied traffic, and traffic dropped because the device just didn't know what to do with it.

nuintari,

@hyc @ChrisUplus The problem is.... it doesn't give you the security you think it does.

Not even close.

Viagra actually works to treat boner problems.

NAT does not solve security problems. But it does create the illusion of doing so.

nuintari,

@hyc @ChrisUplus That would be the core issue.

NAT doesn't deny all inbound connections. It looks at them, and tries to reconcile them with established flows. If it can't find a match, it gives up and drops. It tries to forward first.

NAT doesn't default deny, it drops as a last resort. This is why NAT traversal attacks are a thing.

A proper firewall, configured to default deny, is needed in tandem with a device performing source NAT.

I feel I must repeat myself, but NAT explicitly tries to forward traffic before it resorts to dropping it.

This is why NAT is not a gorram mother fucking firewall.

nuintari,

@ChrisUplus @hyc This is the key distinction.

Firewalls deny.

NAT drops eventually.

Just because that eventually happens in microseconds doesn't make it magical security.

Why I don't respect MSPs reason 000002:

Day 30 of working for an MSP. I had spent the first month doing pointless ConnectWise and IT Glue training videos (see reason 000001). I am finally given a trouble ticket of my very own.

Me: ZOMG, this is a PMTUD issue.
"Senior" """engineer""" """"""training"""""" me: What? No, those don't exist anymore.
....
He proceeded to seize control of the case, driving it from over my shoulder.

Two hours and one ticket to Fortinet later, guess what the issue was?

Hopefully the extreme airquotes were obvious enough.

Why are so many people acting like the cybertruck might be this amazing cash cow for Tesla? Are people fucking stupid? For one thing, the damn thing is ridiculous looking, beyond hideous. I also have serious doubts about its cubic foot capacity. Owners will never overload it because unless they are hauling solid lead, I'll bet good money the bed has insufficient space to haul anything substancial. Holy shit, what moron decided on stainless steel? (Duh, of course it's the chief moron, I know this). We've tried stainless steel for cars before, and just like a land war in Asia, it's always a bad idea. These things are going to show every little mark, every touch, smudge, scratch, dent, ding, and worse, and be a maintenance nightmare to boot. Heaven help the fool who parks it under a tree.

The only people who are going to buy this eyesore already have their tongues firmly attached to Musk's brown eye. For the rest of us, this pile of postmodern engineer's vomit is going to be the biggest flop since the Edsel.

All I want for xmas is nothing. I don't want anyone to get me anything. You would think this would be easy for people to get. I'm going to end the holidays with at least one ugly shirt, a stupid gadget I have no use for, and one completely out of left field item. I never get what I actually want.

God, I fucking hate xmas.

nuintari,

@apgarcia I really hate this so called loving, happy, gift giving season of joy that turns people into nasty, angry, consumerist bastards.

I tell everyone every year, don't get me anything. Isn't going to stop a few people, and it REALLY won't stop the passive aggressive reaction when they realize yet again that I didn't get them anything in return. Lather, rinse, and repeat in 2024, I guarentee it.

And it's always trash grade shit I never need. Mother in law got me pillows one year, from My fucking Pillow. Not only did I have no need for pillows, but the ones I got were really terrible.

Tarah, to random

You GUISE. All you have to do is tell a friend to call you, turn your phone ringer on for the first time ever, sit out in the family room, and when the call comes through (it will scare the shit out of you because your phone ringer has never actually been all the way on before) shout “oh god, not a production server!” and run away very fast

ask me how

nuintari,

@Tarah I've used the at daemon to do this before. Anything is better than watching sportball with the family.

Popehat, to random

I don't post on here much any more, or monitor it much, so probably better to find me on Bluesky if you need me.

De gustibus etc. No platform is perfect. But I feel more comfortable there, and less like I'm likely to get screamed at for using Latin without a CW or something.

nuintari,

@Popehat ^ This is one of the great, preventable failures of the Fediverse. ^

nuintari,

@mark either way, it costs us interesting users.

Has anyone created a firefox fork with all the DoH code scopped out?

nuintari,

@Anniiii I don't trust that. Updates happen, settings get flipped. The Firefox devs have shown that they rabidly believe in DoH as much as I mistrust it. I want the capability skullfucked with an orbital railgun.

This is the last photo ever taken of her.

She died on my lap not five minutes later.

I still feel like I fucked up. I should have fought harder to save her.

Finally putting my x230 to rest, the last sudo poweroff. Hardware is failing beyond the point that makes continuing to repair it worthwhile.

On this laptop I deployed nearly 60 servers (most for at risk groups), 12 tech art projects (solo & collab, some toured worldwide), & gave many lectures & workshops.

If there was ever a loyal and electric steed, it was this x230. It ran #Debian & was good.

I bought it in 2015, for EUR145 on the German eBay, 2nd hand.

#permacomputing #righttorepair

Photo of my x230 Thinkpad, sitting on a wooden decking. Plants growing up through the cracks.

nuintari,

@JulianOliver I still have an x230, batteries are nearly shot, but it runs FreeBSD very well. It gets used in odd jobs such as a tcpdump collector, emergency dhcp server, and thing to ping and ssh to across the network. They are amazingly well built machines.

My modern system76 laptop is shoddy construction by comparison. The built in wireless is crap that is barely supported in Linux, let alone FreeBSD, and I've already had a battery go spicy pillow in under two years. And it gets so hot, I had to buy one of those cooling trays to use it on the couch, it is not lap safe. It's strong points: Far bigger screen and 64 GB ram.

One of the worst things about using Linux/Unix (any type) is having to keep the exact sequence of characters "2>&1" stored in your head forever

nuintari,

@mcc I leave it in a comment in my crontab, as I often need it there anyways.
