Has anyone toyed with distributing “closed source” modules as V8 bytecode? I know you can pre-compile and load bytecode just fine. I also know that to some degree you can turn bytecode back into JS, but is that result useful enough to make the shipping as bytecode a moot point? And are there other options? Can WASM help?

(I know no solution is going to be perfect)

    @feld I’m also a hoarder and running out of space is a real issue, not to mention backups... BTW, I’ve had some luck with archive.org for old movies but not tv shows.

    It’s hard to watch anything below 720p with the displays we have these days (and I guess it’ll only get worse).

    Some extensions I'm keen to make to webforms:

    1. A WebAuthn alternative, since I believe in passkeys but with WebAuthn being a JavaScript API...

    2. Proof of work spam-protection.

    3. Maybe an alternate XML schema?

    4. I'm happy to take further suggestions!

    Any webdevs keen to help play with these extensions? Inform candidate specs?

    Mozilla in reality:

    • Nearly a Google subsidy
    • Chooses business over privacy
    • Made it impossible to reuse it's engine without forking the whole browser (like for chromium)

    @lanodan I think that this is a consequence of the cost of developing and maintaining a web browser. Probably not the only reason but a major reason.

    If we made the web simpler, we'd have more alternatives, but that's not going to happen soon.

    80% of the work to migrate a PG database to MySQL is done thanks to an amazing little perl script (and a few patches on its amazing regexps) in a few hours of work.

    Let's take a few weeks to calmly go through the remaining 20% ; ok ?

    @mjgardner @theory I didn't, I've played with pg2mysql in that case, and patched it a bit for my use case (https://github.com/oz/pg2mysql/tree/fixes).

    It does a decent job with the small schema I need (±60 tables), and also data to a lesser extent.

    For data, I'll probably look into other extract/load patterns that rely on CSV rather than plain inserts (too slow, of course).

    Now, I'll check out sqitch out too! Thanks for the heads-up! 🙏
