How the US Is Destroying Young People’s Future | Scott Galloway [18:06 | May 02 2024 | TED] (youtu.be)

In a scorching talk, marketing professor and podcaster Scott Galloway dissects the data showing that, by many measures, young people in the US are worse off financially than ever before. He unpacks the root causes and effects of this “great intergenerational theft,” asking why we let it continue and showing how we could make...

phoneymouse,

Incredible video. Well said. Needs to be said. Hope some older folks see this.

phoneymouse,

It doesn’t matter if they’re actually “breaking” laws, the government will find a way to make sure they are. It’s the subject of the protest that they don’t like.

phoneymouse,

You wonder how far this slide right can continue. Rather than resigning, every Republican who doesn’t like Trump, Gaetz, or MTG should hold on to their seat and try to right the ship. Otherwise, we just end up with a crazier and crazier bunch.

phoneymouse,

phoneymouse,

NextDNS is basically pihole as an actual DNS. You can configure your own blocklists and allowlists. They also provide pre-built blocklists, some even from AdGuard itself. As for privacy it supports encrypted DNS like DoH and allows you to choose the logging policy for your requests. You can have no logs, or some logs for a certain retention period (ex. 30 days). You can also choose which country your logs are stored in (ex. Switzerland). You can see your own logs and even analytics about your requests. There are loads of other features as well.

I’d like us to just remember the Iran hostage crisis and the Carter/Reagan Election. Carter negotiated in good faith to try to get the US hostages released. It didn’t work because Reagan had paid the Iranians some $40 million through Earl Brian to keep the hostages until after the election. Just an hour or so after Reagan was sworn into office, the hostages were released. This tipped the scales of the election.

Why do I bring this up now? Because the situation with Israel and Gaza is bad for Biden. He knows it and seems to be trying to do something to stop it. However, it is really in Trump’s interest, and even seems to be Israel’s plan anyway, to keep the war going as long as possible. For all we know, Trump is paying off Israel to not agree to a ceasefire.

So, just keep in mind who is being hurt by the situation and who has more to gain from the war going on indefinitely.

phoneymouse,

phoneymouse,

If you ended up with a file open and don’t know how to get out, there’s a good chance you shouldn’t be changing that file in the first place.

phoneymouse,

Feels like the world has become less open. A few years ago, I would have visited just about any country. But, there are more and more I just won’t visit now. I just don’t want to end up a political prisoner in some janky country with an axe to grind with the US. Or, there are literal wars happening there.

phoneymouse,

My grandmother did. Think about her when I see it, and the smell of cigarettes.

phoneymouse,

If you’re a young democrat and you go to DC wanting to get involved with the party, they will give you many hoops to jump through. They will tell you you’re not good enough, you don’t have the right connection, too progressive, etc. They will then call you a year later to offer you a volunteer position on a campaign in Iowa with no way to make income to pay off your student debt or help you pay the bills between elections.

If you’re a Republican and you go to DC looking to get involved with the party, they will usher you right in to any number of think tanks or PACs with plenty of ways to make money while you help Republicans get elected.

phoneymouse,

No, I’m diagnosing a problem with the Democratic Party. They tell enthusiastic youth to go pound sand when they want a job, unless they’re willing to work for free. But, Republicans have a pipeline that brings people in.

phoneymouse,

I started my career trying to work in politics. Now I sold my soul to the tech industry where I can at least earn a living.

phoneymouse,

Yeah, but don’t give the power company control over the temperature in your house. That has gone poorly in Texas with people unable to turn on their AC on super hot days because they opted in to some program that they may not have understood.

The built in features of occupancy detection / geo fencing are cool though.

phoneymouse,

Most thermostats would fail in that timeframe. Our original Nest thermostat failed this year because the connection that turns on the furnace wore out or became thin. Caused our furnace to click on and off repeatedly and ruined a relay on the furnace’s circuit board. Had to replace the thermostat and the furnace circuit board. Costly repair. Upgrade your thermostat before it wears out.

phoneymouse,

They don’t build em like they used to

Seems like a possible, hypothetical scenario that happened there. Looks like some inadvertent collateral damage. Looks like these boys walked into the line of Israeli fire, according to some critics, according to Hamas, according to Pro-Palestinian voices, according to anti-Semitic opponents of Israel. Looks like an isolated incident.

AM radio law opposed by tech and auto industries is close to passing | Ars Technica (arstechnica.com)

A controversial bill that would require all new cars to be fitted with AM radios looks set to become a law in the near future. Yesterday, Senator Edward Markey (D-Mass) revealed that the “AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act” now has the support of 60 US Senators, as well as 246 co-sponsors in the House of Representatives, making...

phoneymouse,

Same, though my dad was liberal. He just kind of rage listened to these guys. Needless to say, I was young and impressionable and picked up some of their extreme views in my youth, but later got straightened out when I went to college. Fuck AM radio. It is responsible for radicalizing people who spend a lot of time in their vehicles. We should not require it in vehicles. I feel the damage done outweighs the potential benefits from emergency messaging. Everyone has a phone for that these days anyway.

phoneymouse,

How are they going to do that after firing the new cars team?

'Horrific' violence at UCLA after counter-protesters attack pro-Palestinian camp (www.bbc.com)

Violence erupted at the University of California, Los Angeles after pro-Israeli counter-demonstrators attacked a pro-Palestinian campus encampment. Bubbling tensions on the campus boiled over following the alleged breach of a “buffer zone” between the rival groups.

phoneymouse,

Why are we arresting addicts? If you want to arrest people for loitering or blocking the sidewalk, fine. But, arresting them for being an addict is asinine. How about we arrest people for having cancer while we are at it.

phoneymouse,

Why 9? What do sci-fi movies titles and prices have in common as it relates to consumer psychology?
