I wish they would finally finish that rewrite in Rust so that it can be properly self-hosted again. The old Python2.7 version is a security nightmare.

Try switching to Postresql 16.2 or later.

Nothing particular, but there was a strange bug in previous versions that in combination with Lemmy caused a small memory leak.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Yes, restarting Lemmy somehow resets the memory use of the database as well.

Honestly, if you want to simplyfy things and reduce maintenance burden, just use Debian stable.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Last time I checked the Yunohost package for Lemmy was severely outdated and not usable.

Nice article except one point: organisations tend to be single issue or intentionally limited in scope to allow wider coalition building. This is IMHO fine as you can easily be a member of multiple organisations.

The friction usually comes from people that want to use an organisation as a platform to promote a niche and controversial topic. People that do this have a really poor understanding of organisation internal dynamics and/or have made their membership of a single organisation too much of their personal identity to see that in the end an organisation is just a tool to achieve certain agreed goals.

That sound great! Thanks for being receptive to feedback 👍

Edit: works nicely. Just a minor suggestion: on desktop it should show not only the logo but also the name of the instance at the top left. Thanks!

Edit2: and on mobile you might replace “Frontpage” with the instance name as well.

On a side note: we have a local instance here: photon.slrpnk.net which I recommend to use over 3rd party hosted ones due password security considerations.

Generally there is not much wrong with using the official version, but since Lemmy sadly does not yet support modern app authentication methods like Oauth2, it is better to use 1st party hosted frontends as this minimizes the risk of your password leaking.

Anyone got a real source on this? I grew up near a forest that had loads of these, and all the leaves were always spiky. Sure, there were also loads of deer around, but I can’t remember having ever seen a non-spiky one like that. Looks more like an odd mutation or so to me.

From the looks of it there is a considerable outer layer of lighter plants that are likely required to have a good plant-mass to flotation device ratio, but this layer makes it hard to access the inner plants that could be used as food crops.

poVoq,

Yes, but to “harvest” such plants they just need to pull them out of the water and compost them somewhere. Not quite the same as harvesting some actual food product.

Complex topic, but in most circumstances the plants on the water will increase evaporation.

What helps is taller plants on the side of a pond that form a windbreak, as evaporation is stongly influenced by that.

Time for an ICQ for the Fediverse?

Looks like ICQ is finally shutting down, just as interest in retro internet tools is growing.

Every modern XMPP server supports XMPP over HTTPS (via BOSH or Websockets) and it works just fine.

But I wasn’t actually taking about integrating it in the UI of the fediverse instance itself. Which would be nice to have, but really not vital at all if you have a nice mobile chat client.

It has some smaller issues, but overall it works well.

You are very outdated in your info about xmpp. Most of the stuff you mention is available these days.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Gajim will have some more of that in the next version, Monocles or Cheogram have more modern features than Conversations and Siskin is very outdated feature wise and you should probably replace it with Monal.

That said it is not true that the three clients you mentioned have none of that. Sure they don’t have all of it, and there is some feature mismatch between them, but you are making it sound much worse than it is.

Oh and you can always use Movim which has most of the features you mentioned.
