@jon with the combination of very specific time and undefined date on year 2030, this reminds me of the old soviet joke that goes bit like "a man goes to the car store to buy a car, he pays for it and gets told, ok, come back in 5 years to collect your new vehicle; he pauses for a moment and asks, morning or evening? the clerk replies, does it matter? and the man says: yes, the washing machine repairman is also due on that day"

Pekka gets his final grades for all subjects; he got 8s and 9s throughout, and even managed to get a 9 in English, despite what he was afraid of while taking the test.

@ww3real on what scale

pony,
@pony@blovice.bahnhof.cz avatar

@Alon @ww3real cz schools have increasingly adopted A-F scale, elementaries use 1 to 5, 5 being unacceptable failure

@jon what exactly is the orange pants lady doing

pony,
@pony@blovice.bahnhof.cz avatar

@jon i have always assumed that the longest train line in estonia has like 25 km, not 200, because how big can a country with fewer people than prague be

pony,
@pony@blovice.bahnhof.cz avatar

@Island_Martha @jon how are they going to offer connecting suburban services to paldiski

pony,
@pony@blovice.bahnhof.cz avatar

@jon @Island_Martha well, there are surely things that can possibly be done, but what is actually planned? surely they have thought about that

pony,
@pony@blovice.bahnhof.cz avatar

@jon @JiMakinen neither, if i understand the sea depth map correctly, the estonian coast is quite steep, you will need the portal more inland, more than the chunnel has

pony,
@pony@blovice.bahnhof.cz avatar

@jon @JiMakinen no, but if you compare the two estonian[1] and french[2] coast, it seems you will really need to place the portal more inland, or maybe consider something like doing it at the big island northwest and connect to the city over a bridge? or an artificial island like oresund?

pony,
@pony@blovice.bahnhof.cz avatar

@jon @JiMakinen i don't think so? i'd actually suggest both the portals should be out of established urban areas, the travel time reduction will be such that we are not really thinking about 10 minutes here and there and you will want possibly large freight terminals to assemble trains coming into the tunnels, offer car shuttles, etc.

pony,
@pony@blovice.bahnhof.cz avatar

@jon @JiMakinen this is trivially true, ulemiste is much better positioned, you could for example consider a portal at whatever looks as a cargo terminal east of it, at the end of the airport (the tunnel doesn't need to be a straight line ofc, you'd slowly and gently curve to wherever you want to dig under the see), while there are no options at balti jaam really

pony,
@pony@blovice.bahnhof.cz avatar

@jon @JiMakinen at the balti jaam, i don't see any other option than already digging it 50 meters down like a soviet metro

pony,
@pony@blovice.bahnhof.cz avatar

@jon this place may have some advantage, but having useful future doesn't sound like one of them tbh

pony,
@pony@blovice.bahnhof.cz avatar

@jon there is just one longer platform, there are also only two tracks in direction of the future ulemiste "hbf", i guess it's a cool terminus for the regional lines extending beyond ulemiste, but like... nah

@DiegoBeghin@mastodon.social avatar

Today was the first time I seriously planned traveling by night train, and it became clear that they can't seriously compete against high speed rail or planes.

Prague is about as far away from Brussels as Marseille. The Eurostar to Marseille (when it runs) is 5h, the night train to Prague is... 15h, with a more unreliable schedule. Even giving an 8h sleeping discount to the night train, it's quite a bit longer.

pony,
@pony@blovice.bahnhof.cz avatar

@DiegoBeghin there still is the iron curtain on the czech borders when it comes to trains, partly due to geography, but also because of failed policy, literally only double tracked or electrified crossing is to dresden, so like going anywhere to the west on a train is just... nah

@pony@blovice.bahnhof.cz avatar

also was wondering, for a moment, how is the entire DPP electric buses thing going

well

@jon generally speaking the reason to pick the CD pendolino is not that the train is somewhat good, but you get a consistent offer, you know what kind of services are going to be provided and which seat you are picking in the reservation system, unless the entire train breaks down (which doesn't happen often) and needs to be replaced, you are not going to come to your train to find the entire carriage missing or being replaced with a 70's bautzen, or even just slightly similar type but with different seating arrangement, so suddenly you don't get a table or some other thing you wanted

pony,
@pony@blovice.bahnhof.cz avatar

@djasa @jon VR Sm3 was made in multiple series over quite some time, the later ones surely were built at the same time as the CD order

pony,
@pony@blovice.bahnhof.cz avatar

@jon @djasa there's also the newer international fleet with Sm6 for the karelian trains, maybe that also gets a refurb and is going to be reused?

@jon I always try to follow those [11-96] labels under the class designation that most railways here have and i feel that i almost always end up on the opposite side of the carriage i expected, i always feel stupid because there must be something obvious i misinterpret, but...

pony,
@pony@blovice.bahnhof.cz avatar

@djasa @jon is that so? when i see [116-11] on the rightmost door, of course i assume it means the closest seat to the door is going to be 11

pony,
@pony@blovice.bahnhof.cz avatar

@djasa @jon this is dumb

pony,
@pony@blovice.bahnhof.cz avatar

@jon @djasa apparently this logic isn't quite as universal as you may think, while most czech railways carriages appear to be labeled the way David describes it, there's of course an exception to the rule where the numbering system is exactly as i expect it (the number closest to the door is the number of seat closest to the door) AND it also breaks the rule of having the entire length of the carriage, only half of it is "assigned" to this door

maybe don't get mad when people ignore these labels, they are doing it for their own good
