Two years ago, I joined Fastly with the acquisition of Glitch. Next week, our whole team is going to show you why, and what we've been up to, with an amazing lineup of announcements. I'm incredibly excited about the event we're hosting in NYC next week, and hope you'll watch the live stream — I promise you have never seen a tech keynote like this one. Check out https://fastly.com/instant to add it to your calendar, and go to https://youtube.com/live/pgNjS1_kOW8 to add a reminder to watch on YouTube.

It'd be great if you could get someone, anyone who is responsible for your Maths programming to read https://dotnet.social/@SmartmanApps/110897908266416158 - in particular when I covered the topic of e-calcs https://dotnet.social/@SmartmanApps/111164851485070719 where I covered the DIFFERENT ways that the different MS products do it wrong. The Windows "standard" calc says that 2+3x4=20, in "Scientific" mode it says that's 14 but also says 8/2(1+3)=8/(1+3), etc.

Just throwing it out there now, preemptively: any suspect flags you see hanging from my house, any insurrections that I may or may not have taken part in, any World War II or civil war memorabilia that you may find prominently displayed in my house...

My wife did it! Blame her! That woman doesn't know how to act!

Baseball's all-time leaders lists have changed overnight with the integration of the Negro Leagues into Major League Baseball statistics. Josh Gibson is now officially one of the greatest players of all time, beating Ty Cobb for career batting average and Babe Ruth for slugging percentage and OPS. His great grandson, Sean Gibson, hopes that the MVP award will be renamed in his honor. The trophy was previously named after Kenesaw Mountain Landis, baseball's first commissioner, who played a key role in keeping baseball segregated. “How ironic would it be for Josh Gibson to replace the man who denied more than 2,300 men the opportunity to play baseball in the major leagues,’’ Sean Gibson told USA Today.

We've all been laughing at the obvious fails from Google's AI Overviews feature, but there's a serious lesson in there too about how it disrupts the relational nature of information. More in the latest Mystery AI Hype Theater 3000 newsletter:

related sneak peek into an upcoming piece: i firmly believe that if you're going to spend money on one thing online it should be a domain, particularly as online identity gets more fragmented. as platforms come and go, you can always find me there.

For tonight’s Full Moon:

In the late 1800s, Jamaican children would play Moonshine Baby on the night of a full moon. Claude McKay recalled his father telling them that “the making of these moonshine babies was an old African custom and that different villages used to compete in the making of them.” (“Boyhood in Jamaica”, Phylon (1940-1956), Vol. 14, No. 2 (2nd Qtr., 1953), pp. 134-145)

Olive Senior wrote about this game in her poem “Moonshine Dolly”.

I think crypto broke people’s brains. There was a clearly useless technology being hyped by pundits, VCs and tech companies which turned out as worthless as we all thought.

So there’s now a gut reaction to treating any hyped technology as a scam. The trend is similar to how after the dotcom crash, pundits proclaimed every year that we were in a bubble for almost two decades while big tech started generating hundreds of billions in revenue.

AI is the same. It’s hyped but there’s also substance.

My Apple Card is expiring this summer, and the replacement physical card arrived in the mail today. Activating was super-duper easy—just bring it in close proximity to your iPhone and tap a button or two on screen. Done.

But what do I do with the old card? It's titanium so it's not easily destroyed.

I've had metal Amex cards since 2010 or so. When Amex sends a replacement card, they include a return envelope custom made for mailing them your expired card for recycling.

Are you a man who works in tech, writing code for a living? Do you work with women who do the same? Then you absolutely are at high risk of always assuming their code isn’t good enough… that you know more than they do, even when it’s their area of experience, even when they have years more experience than you do. Unless you are working to explicitly remove the sexism assumptions our society has drilled into you, you are also being sexist. That’s how culture works.

Please stop. Be introspective.

There were so many ways to handle this (fair compensation would have been a good start), and this feels like the worst possible option.

@poppastring they offered to pay her for her actual voice and she refused, so the best option would have been to never release this in the first place. And removing is the second best option.
