some_guy,

My dad married just such a vindictive pos during his final years. It’s fun having to deal with her as we process his trust. None of us can understand how he didn’t see her for who she really is.

some_guy,

Wait, who was hooked on smack? Please say it was Yoko.

some_guy,

You’re almost there. It’s because they’re liars (the politicians / boosters). Tribalism is reserved for their base. The leaders are cynical af.

You think Tucker is genuinely perplexed by the issues he talks about with interviewees? Don’t worry, that’s a rhetorical question. I know Lemmy users aren’t idiots. Just making a point.

some_guy,

NY is killing it. More of this, please.

Airbnb has fought the rules in court, arguing they were essentially a ban, and that they would hurt visitors looking for affordable accommodation.

They’re called hotels. A ban is appropriate. Fuck you.

some_guy,

At least 521 U.S. towns and cities with populations of 1,000 to 200,000 disbanded policing between 1972 and 2017, according to a peer-reviewed 2022 paper by Rice University Professor of Economics Richard T. Boylan.

In the past two years, at least 12 small towns have dissolved their departments.

That works out to an average of 11 per year. I haven’t needed to think about numbers in a long time. Did I fuck that up? Cause if not, this sounds like a lot of panic over losing fewer police departments than the norm.

some_guy,

I saw a documentary that spoke to some Twump (sic) supporters who lived in a shithole building that they didn’t realize was owned by the Kushners. I can’t recall anything else about it that might help identify it.

some_guy,

If my iPad Pro was taken away from me tomorrow, and I needed to choose a non-iPad replacement, I’d pick the Amazon Fire Max 11 over the Pixel Tablet. It managed to change my opinion about Android tablets a little more than the Pixel Tablet, which despite it being much better than I thought it would be when used every day, is still flawed. The Amazon tablet isn’t perfect either, but it is a lot cheaper, and that makes its problems far easier to forgive.

Where do I go from here? I like the Pixel Tablet, and it seems some Android tablets are better than I remember, but this is hardly a ringing endorsement. That’s why I’m returning to my iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard. I like the Fire Max 11, and I have a better understanding of the Pixel Tablet’s strengths after more time with it, but the fact is my three-year-old iPad still does everything better than the pair of them.

The thing is (and I say this as someone who LOVES my iPad mini), the only people who will notice the deficiencies will be people who have used an iPad long enough to notice what’s missing. It’s the same way that I couldn’t understand how people didn’t rebel against the crappy text on Windows circa 2004. The Mac was so clearly better at rendering text, but nobody who didn’t own a Mac thought there was anything wrong.

Windows eventually caught up on that, but the point is that you notice what is taken away more than you notice what is added. And if you have no basis for comparison, you have no idea what you’re missing. People will accept what is “good enough.”

some_guy,

Yes, for a few years now, via the Files app.

some_guy,

See, you’re missing the part where republicans aren’t able to commit crimes. It’s not scientifically possible.

Would you be surprised if hard-right people thought it’s a good strategy not to breathe? Cause that’s also not possible.

Just to be clear, this is satire. They’re brains literally don’t work correctly. They are not well. And we have to suffer as a result.

I've been blocking ads for so long that actually seeing them feels perverse

I use ad blockers and open source privacy focused software whenever I can but occasionally I have to use computers that don’t belong to me or an older phone where my usual applications aren’t installed and seeing all the advertisements just feels dirty and dystopian....

some_guy,

I support significant regulation, but it won’t happen. But having a course like the one you took as well as media-literacy should be required middle-school education with a more sophisticated follow-up in high school. That also won’t happen because then you don’t get the people who vote for GOP pieces of shit. It’s in their interest to have citizens who are easily manipulated.

My father said babies were being aborted basically when ready for birth. I said there’s no way that was happening, said send me a link. One glance at the page and I didn’t need to read the article because of the gimmicks all over plus obviously bogus ads. He had a doctorate of mech engineering, but he couldn’t handle life on the internet. Typing this, I’m horrified to realize that I’m glad he passed when he did and didn’t end up with ever-increasingly wacko beliefs that could have harmed our relationship.

some_guy,

I recall that she supported some regulation of the internet that I considered harmful. I can’t recall the specifics anymore.

some_guy,

“Gabriel Attal, the education minister, says that no one should walk into a classroom wearing something which could suggest what their religion is.”

I was initially torn on this, but as long as it’s for all religions, I support it. I firmly believe that I shouldn’t know your religion unless I ask. Religion is toxic.

I do think you should have the freedom to wear religious signifiers as an adult. I just don’t approve. But I don’t want to stop you. Children in school? This is the same (to me) as requiring them to leave their phones at home.

some_guy,

The first is a good argument. And I support breaking that law.

The second is a good argument in that I wasn’t factoring the requirement (which I kinda don’t care about because I reject religion, so I know that I’m wrong even though I reject religion, fuck religion). Were religion not so toxic, I would have more sympathy. In this case, I’m gonna sound like a real fuckwad, but assimilate.

The third is just silly.

some_guy,

I am bigoted against religion. I otherwise accept everyone for who they are. I have no shame in taking this stance.

some_guy,

I support a ban on cowboy boots, too.

some_guy,

These kids aren’t being taken from their families. They aren’t being forced to give up their religion in their homes. These are not the same. This isn’t about “other religious groups.” It’s all religions while at school, and I’m fine with that.

some_guy,

I’m not in support of nationalism. I don’t know if what you said is accurate or not. I simply approve of keeping religion out of schools.

some_guy,

Blah blah blah…

What being an agent for the Russian state on social media does to your brain.

Any chance to have a separated [PORN] tag to avoid blocking all kind of NSFW posts?

Many NSFW have nothing to do with porn. Sometimes are horror contents, some times are crude images, some times are just lazy people who don’t know of the Spoiler tag. Can we have a quick and easy way to filter off all the (very funny but not alway wanted) Porn posts without locking out those other contents???

some_guy,

People keep saying this and I keep not seeing very many salacious pics. I wonder why.

some_guy,

I know we’re federated with nsfwlemmy or whatever the name is. What’s the other one? I want to check.

I know we haven’t had drama about defederating from some of the instances that I see other instances ranting about. Which is good. I don’t want us to defed.

some_guy,

I mean, if other people force you to be a bigot, aren’t you the real victim?

Someone linked to a substack full of screenshots of antisemitism on Shitter from the weekend. I scrolled and scrolled and scrolled and I wasn’t at the halfway point when I closed the tab. It was a bummer. A real lose-hope moment.
