spujb,

repeat after me: spamming the same meme 8 billion times doesn’t make it funnier, just makes me want to block you 😅

spujb,

start taxing trucks proportional to the wear they cause on public roads. doing so will supplement funding for repairing said roads as well as to encourage rail hauling instead of dangerous hulking vehicles on the same roads we have to commute on.

spujb,

Yes, but the increase in fuel cost per unit mass is not proportional to the increase in road wear, which is exponential and absolutely massive in commercial use. Hugely important fact that plays into my opinion that vehicle size should be taxed.

Keto was originally intended for children suffering from epilepsy, and was quite effective for it:

The ketogenic diet is effective in substantially decreasing difficult-to-control seizures and can successfully be administered in a wide variety of settings. source

More recently it has been adopted as a weight loss tool, but it doesn’t seem perfect and especially there seems to be no reason to participate for more than a few months (when a more wholesome diet intended for long term sustenance of fitness might be adopted):

Ketogenic low-carbohydrate diets have increased in popularity over recent years, but the degree of carbohydrate restriction required to achieve ketosis remains unclear. In general, studies have shown greater weight loss at 3–6 months with KLC diets compared with LF diets, however this difference is no longer apparent at 12 months. source

That said, this meme participates in a series of ad hominem attacks about the character of those participating in keto dieting which are broadly inaccurate and clearly intended to effect rage in its audience, which explains the poor reception of the post. I would suggest better rhetorical methods than exhibited here to those interested in furthering the adoption of vegan diets.

Misinformation, you are lying.

[A] comprehensive meta-analysis reports a significant protective effect of a vegetarian diet versus the incidence and/or mortality from ischemic heart disease (−25%) and incidence from total cancer (−8%). Vegan diet conferred a significant reduced risk (−15%) of incidence from total cancer. source

[And the results of this study] suggest that a vegan diet does not seem to be detrimental to endurance and muscle strength in healthy young lean women. In fact, our study showed that submaximal endurance might be better in vegans compared with omnivores. Therefore, these findings contradict the popular belief of the general population. source

when did i say what my diet was lol

spujb,

spujb,
spujb,

definitely shouldn’t be an only solution, socializing and talking it over are also very helpful. i think the game just has a very specific level of escapism that neutralizes thought loops which improves the efficacy of other coping mechanisms.

spujb,

unintentionally hilarious comment

spujb,

It’s so wild that I have seen like, four Linux people in my lifetime admit the simple truth that every version of Windows and macOS, iOS and Android since conception have been geared progressively more toward being absolutely friendly to users that are dumb as rocks—in a good way—where Linux has absolutely not. And that this barrier is 100% of the difference between proprietary desktop environments and Linux. Linux is majority developed for power users, full stop. The closest I have seen to the contrary is like, maybe the Adwaita devs, and unfortunately they don’t have the reach to apply their knowledge to essential UX stuff like app installation or hardware compatibility.

This is why I get so frustrated with the “just switch to Linux, loser” crowd, because it’s so utterly disconnected with the reality that most people do not have the resources to invest in any kind of learning curve. It has to be intuitive and accessible from the start. Web developers understand this. MS, Apple, and Google get it. Like, even people who design public transportation understand that they must cater to a user who is drunk and not fluent in the local language when designing signage and systems. Why doesn’t the vast majority of the Linux community get it?

spujb, (edited )

interesting, TIL! i will definitely look into this. but yeah it does speak volumes that this isn’t even in alpha yet and it’s 2024. specifically hoping the app store and the bluetooth/audio UX are watertight because those are the primary weak points i see for non-power users in GNOME and such.

also doesn’t exactly exude faith that one of their biggest marketing points is… yet another terminal with gpu rendering. hot take: the point of the desktop metaphor has been to bring the user beyond the terminal since 1970. expecting the average user to go back to relying on text commands for daily use should not be on the table if you are developing a desktop environment.

spujb,

the *nix community has a toxicity problem, absolutely. it’s tradition at this point, a culture stemming back to rtfm. i highly applaud those voices in the FOSS movement that break this stereotype and embrace the user without question.

spujb,

me but whenever it’s a period drama and the makeup artists give the women fucken contouring?

spujb,

@mypasswordis1234 your credit link isn’t actually the original artist. Here is their Deviantart, thanks to the kind internet soul who helped me last time this was posted :)

spujb,

Actually it’s even more realism, when the shield is on the power button it indicates pending updates.

spujb,

whoever downvoted this im in ur walls

spujb, (edited )

That option was actually fully removed in 8 I believe, then restored in 11 (and newer versions of 10 iirc?) because everyone hated it so much lol

Also I think it was Vista that replaced the flag shield on the power button with a yellow exclamation mark shield instead to differentiate it from the new UAC which used the flag shield logo

edit: images bc i love this stuff lol

If you don’t have the time to watch there’s a text article let me find it here

spujb,

valid information to know. i don’t think the ads can be turned off during the first boot setup process though, which is a key distinction here.

Why do people throw out old motors, bicycles, anything metal into rivers and lakes instead of a junk yard or the trash system?

I have been watching magnet fishing and people love to toss stuff over bridges without a second thought on the environmental impact. Hiding evidence I can almost understand but not lawnmowers, car batteries, etc....

spujb,

Misinformation, you are lying.

Many factors contribute to higher illegal disposal rates. As stated by many researchers, the most common reason is poor waste management infrastructure, such as waste collection facilities and transportation [6,7,8]. Therefore, providing infrastructure may be a solution to reduce these business-as-usual (BAU) practices [9]. However, Sedova et al. found that illegal dumping behavior is also influenced by other factors such as education level, awareness, dumping cost, and income level [10]. Dumping costs are related to low-income communities. Communities tend to participate in illegal dumping practices rather than pay a certain amount of money [8]. source

spujb,

ye, and if you don’t like the negative connotations of “lazy,” substitute it with “attentive to making cost effective decisions.”

if it costs more, in time or in money, for an individual to properly dispose of something than the negative consequences of just chucking it in a river, the latter option will be chosen. this hilights the importance of community organization to set up a means for disposal, to make it accessible, and to make it known. by working together both the labor cost of disposal and the externality cost of environmental damage can be limited beyond what any individual could do.

spujb, (edited )

You may be misreading something? We are definitely in agreement but you frame it as though we are not.

The person I responded to said “It’s not a poverty issue, it’s a drug issue.” I made the comment to combat that ridiculous Reagan-era bs.
