Have you ever bough an external hardrive only to take the disk out of it?

Hiya, so am looking to buy more storage and while browsing am seeing some external harddisks, such as Western Digital My Book and Seagate Expansion Desktop for cheaper than the internal harddisks themselves. Have seen this one video from KTZ Systems where he bought up multiple of these external ones just to open them up and use...

Moonrise2473,

Yes and i got “scammed” - western digital in order to save $3 included the USB port directly on the drive motherboard instead of the usual sata+usb like anyone else was doing

Moonrise2473,

“tragic mishap” is when it accidentally happens once a decade, not when it “accidentally” happens every day

Moonrise2473,

“Teens are dying on bikes” - it’s because of a bike of it’s because of a fucking truck that weighs like 300 bikes?

Or maybe the service is degraded because there are thousands of people connecting to the same cell and Verizon can’t justify the $$$ of placing more transceivers/bandwidth in a supermarket placed in the middle of nowhere with zero residents.

I don’t think Walmart is willing to pay millions in fines from the FCC by installing an illegal 5g jammer because reasons

I like metube from a manually curated list

Liked videos or added to playlist requires Google login on both the viewer and the downloader and for me that is unacceptable

@pirati

Moonrise2473,

HouseFresh disappeared from Google Search results. Now what? - An elaborate historical analysis and overview of Google search results and media landscape (housefresh.com)

From Forbes and Money content farms, to Google search algorithm changes promoting generic and generated content and big media platforms over specific results, to Google prioritizing ads, overpriced, and other worse results.

Moonrise2473,

So maybe it could be that they set cloudflare so aggressive that’s blocking all the bots including the googlebot

Moonrise2473,

It’s resurfacing old tech? My Sony Ericsson P800 from 20 years ago had a screen that worked great in direct sunlight. It worked best in direct sunlight, the brightest the sun, the better you could see. Downside is that in the dark it had poor illumination

It’s LCD with a reflective background and lateral illumination rather than backlight

Moonrise2473,

I deleted all my content last year 😞

Should have replaced it with some random words

Moonrise2473,

I like the pixel art

Moonrise2473,

I played it on my phone and I really like it. Nice music nice physics, fun details like you can crash to the trash can and have the lid close over your body lol

Moonrise2473,

Mine it’s also pretty hot, and i use it in IT mode

Moonrise2473,

I think it’s h300

Don’t know how hot as I don’t know how to read it (using a consumer mobo with no ipmi) but it’s “your finger will burn” hot

Moonrise2473,

Last time someone tried to deliver some aid, the IDF bombed them because they thought they were Hamas.

…wikipedia.org/…/World_Central_Kitchen_aid_convoy…

The IDF fired three missiles in five minutes at three of the WCK’s cars, with some survivors of the first strike boarding the second car, which was minutes later hit by a second missile, and some survivors of the second strike boarding the third car, which was in turn struck by a third missile.[3] All seven aid workers were killed

But the IDF said sorry we were thinking it was Hamas so again the west is ok with that

Did tiktok change something?

I have friends that send me tiktok links via whatsapp and then they ask questions about it like “what do you think, scam or not”. I used to open them with cookies rejected in ddg browser but now it pretends to freeze after 4 seconds of play, then it says that i must open it in the app and replaces the “play” button with...

Moonrise2473,

LOL “cringe” as subdomain in my instances 😂

Moonrise2473,

i tried and it didn’t work - but maybe it’s because it was the “vm.tiktok…” shortened link that tracks the user that shared it (when i open that link i can see a banner with a photo of my friend and “join tiktok with [friend name]”

next time i should try to open the link, get the real url, then use that

Moonrise2473,

I tried on my pixel and it seems as snappy as gboard, thinking to switch. Although i didn’t load extra dictionaries or the proprietary swipe module

Moonrise2473,

that’s now, 15 years too late to revert the “i need to be careful or the carrier will fuck my wallet” mindset that everyone got

Moonrise2473,

In my case it’s just temporary. Every once in a while I’m supposed to take the phone, delete all the useless shit, archive the photos in the computer. Problem is last time I did that was over a year ago because procrastination

Moonrise2473,

MMS yes, by deleting all the APN profiles. Always did it since 20 years ago

Can disable SMS sending by changing the “SMS center number” but I don’t think can disable reception

Luckily in my country the carrier in the early 2000s they decided to scam users with MMS and the “internet button” nearby the “OK” button and not with the “SMS double dip” where both sender and receiver would be charged for texts - too prone to abuse from assholes with large plans

“Internet button scam” explained for young people: in the early 2000s some carriers charged 1-2 euro each time you started an internet session. This for two main reasons:

  1. To block new chat apps. We had “jar” apps like ebuddy, IMO or jacksms that could let the user chat spending much less. They were super optimized for data saving and even at the astronomical 20 euro per MB that they were charging at the time, it meant a chat session with a friend would cost 8 cents instead of 3 euro of texts. I would make two short calls to my friend, it would mean “go online and check the chat”
  2. Get free money from people with fat fingers. Opening the browser would immediately charge the user 2 euro. There was a competition between phone makers to place the “internet button” in the most asshole position. Nearby the “call” button, or as a dynamic button, like at the home screen, the “ok” button would open the internet, while in the menu would be “ok”. I had a Motorola where they placed it in the middle or the D-pad and I always accidentally pressed it. This could be mitigated by avoiding the purchase of a “carrier branded” phone because it could be toggled off. If you bought a phone with Vodafone branding instead every button had a way to let you spend money
Moonrise2473,

We didn’t have unlimited texts long after WhatsApp. Nowadays every plan comes with thousands of them but just because nobody uses them and a big number is free marketing

MMS never free except some scam from Tim and Vodafone where if you paid 10 euro to recharge a PAYG account, they would actually credit you 8 euro and give you 50 MMS “free”, but expiring in 30 days and could only be sent free only if on the same network. But how could someone know if it was on the same network??? Exactly, it was designed preying on the fact that it was possible to change network …

Moonrise2473,

It depends by the network.

Here Tim and Vodafone have teams of lawyers and professional scammers to brainstorm new ideas to extract more money from users.

For example, a few years ago they decided that the monthly plans should not renew every earth month, but every moon cycle. Can you imagine to rewrite the billing software to charge users every moon cycle instead of every month? A nightmare but they stole billions, because there are 13 moon cycles in a year instead of 12 months.

Another scam that they have on PAYG plans (literally everyone here is on PAYG plans because otherwise there’s a 10 euro month tax derived from the 70s where mobile phone service was a luxury and not a necessity) is that they allow overdrafts up to 2 euro, but with a 2 euro fee. And they do plans like 10.90 monthly but only allowing paying credit in multiple of 10. So you might be 90 cents short, but they would first let you go in negative credit, then charge you 2 euro “overdraft fee” next time you add credit.

So as a population we are always vary of phone carriers. We are always on the defensive “OK, where’s the catch, how would they fuck me”

Luckily I now have a plan from a swiss owned carrier that would take from my credit card the exact money that is needed to renew the PAYG plan. So the credit is always zero and there’s no way that I’m spending more than I should
