Even though I never cooked when I was living in Southeast Asia (you.. really don’t need to), paying attention to food procurement and techniques helped me level up when I started cooking when I left that region.

(Eating street food there is often cheaper than buying ingredients and cooking yourself. In almost all SEA cities)

There’s a lot of stuff I felt I just ‘knew’ because I was around people who dealt with food all the time

@alysondecker yeah definitely a question of density, which is also why I like where I am in spite of many other issues (I never have to get into a car, or even transit, to shop at multiple places)

I just straight up walked out of a medical appointment. Stopped speaking when it was clear I was not being respected and that I was not being allowed to correct inaccurate information. Got up and walked out with her yelling through the building after me.

Like that was a miserable experience but on the other hand the power I felt???? Untouchable. Did you know you can just leave?? Happy Pride Month my friends!!!

I know I've mentioned this before, but one of my favorite features on the Mac that has no equivalent on an iPhone or iPad is adding new words to the system-wide spelling dictionary. The feature dates back to Mac OS X 10.0 and I'm pretty sure was in NeXTStep a decade before that.

And, even better, the custom words you add to the dictionary are stored in a simple text file, one word per line, at:

~/Library/Group Containers/group.com.apple.AppleSpell/Library/Spelling/LocalDictionary

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

That text file used to be at an even simpler location:

~/Library/Spelling/LocalDictionary

but Apple moved it at some point in the last few years into a sandboxed folder. Kinda sucks that such much stuff is buried deeper in ~/Library/, but one can see why this file deserves to be protected.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

If you ever make a mistake or simply wish to remove a word from your custom spelling dictionary, you don't need to edit the text file. Just secondary-click on the word again and choose "Unlearn Spelling”:

Voted in today, a place where the Democratic primary determines some of the ultimate races. One race really struck me as emblematic of the future, assuming constitutional democracy survives in the U.S. 1/

heidilifeldman,
@heidilifeldman@mastodon.social avatar

In one contest for county commissioner (municipal legislator, for non-Americans), three candidates vied for the Democratic nomination. One of them, though, was, until very recently, a registered Republican. Even before I knew this, it was apparent to me that she was the most conventionally pro-business candidate. Then, I read a column she wrote explaining her change of party. 2/

heidilifeldman,
@heidilifeldman@mastodon.social avatar

With the Republican Party having degenerated into a cultish, criminal, evangelical Christian organization, it is no longer a meaningful participant in U.S. democratic politics. So, the Democratic Party is going to absorb many people into its right flank. My prediction: if U.S. constitutional democracy survives, the Republican Party will not, and the Democratic Party will eventually split into two parties, one more to the left and one more to the right. 4/4

I got a good quote in this story about that dumb Zoom Idea to have "digital twins" attend meetings in your place https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2024/06/zoom-ceo-envisions-ai-deepfakes-attending-meetings-in-your-place/

@scott @simon And yet there is no knowledge transfer, because LLMs have no knowledge, no understanding of what they are copying and remixing and extruding in response to prompts.

“AI” may be fascinatingly useful at pattern discovery and pattern matching. But a bird dog has infinite more knowledge about what it’s retrieving. A barking dog has infinite more understanding of what it’s communicating.

I'm from the US . Who is Nigel Farage? Why did he get milkshake thrown at him?

vfrmedia,
@vfrmedia@social.tchncs.de avatar

@Jaden3 he's a far right wing politician who helped push Brexit (UK leaving the European Union) wants to be the British Donald Trump (he is actively trying to help Trump get elected in USA as well)

All that happened just about 45 minutes drive from where I live...

PoliceStateUK,
@PoliceStateUK@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@Jaden3 Right-wing nationalist politician, ex-banker, general shithead.

He was an MEP (campaigning to get us out of the EU) and since achieving that he's rebranded his scam several times to screw things up for everyone again/more.

He has EU citizenship (through his wife) by the way, so when he's finished setting fire to this country again, he'll probably piss off somewhere nicer.

Big news: Kitsune Tail's Steam Next Fest demo is live now! Go get it at https://store.steampowered.com/app/1325260 and experience the first part of this queer furry love triangle wrapped in an SMB3 jacket

You should definitely check the options. There's a CRT shader in Kitsune Tails made by @JoshJers which isn't on by default (because people get upset by that kinda thing) but playing with it on is totally the recommended experience

And for those of you who have Steam Decks, we've verified it works on that, too! And there's a new reveal trailer, showing off some of the bosses: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRBcm5fagUU

@metin a third of the world say they didn't like sunburn anyway, others say we can certainly do without because we have electricity, others start to plan their infinite party night. Musk says he's going to negotiate with the aliens, and go in an offensive costume, drunk and tries to mate with some, when that backfires, he says it's fine, he can rebuild a sun anyway, it's basic physics, we have all that figured out.

Someone at my makerspace meetup was talking about the critically acclaimed "Three Body Problem", but the moment he started describing the synopsis where humans were making preparations centuries ahead of some existential threat, I just laughed. Humans today have demonstrated they are incapable of planning their own survival merely decades ahead, let alone centuries.
