robotalien,

Looking at some designs of old websites, I'm impressed by how much difference texture can make. I've been putting gradients on everything because lets me, and I can also make triangle and simple shapes, but I can't create, for example, polka dots or carpet patterns in pure CSS. I'm struggling to make actual image files to use in my . So far I made a 4x4 dot pattern and I think it made a previously pure white background much better.

@robotalien Agreed — those dots make it a lot more engaging! Are you doing a two-layer background, with the dot tiled and then a gradient on top of that to fade them out? Or is it mask trickery?

(Also, you actually can create patterns with pure CSS, though it usually leads to complicated gradient values. See, for example, https://projects.verou.me/css3patterns/, which includes the values for each example; or, the “Pattern” preset on https://colorgradient.dev/gradient-generator/.)

@emmanuelc @robotalien Oh, man, do I ever! So good, even now.
