@kyonshi is there a system for spell failure with the wrong spell coming out? If not, you might have "the next spell written down" as the 'misfire'. That'd end up with some proper resource shenanigans.
@kyonshi#VancianMagic is probably the element I like least about #dnd games. Yes, I get it: spell slots reinforce a resource-focused style of play. You run out of spell slots as you run out of torches, ammo, and hit points, but for me Vancian casting always represented a tool-like, somehow dull approach to sorcery. I prefer, how magic systems are re-envisioned in some modern #osr (adjacent) games: #DCC (😍) #Shadowdark#FiveTorchesDeep#TheBlackSwordHack …to name but a few
@kyonshi the big thing about Vancian spells from the books was that they were powerful.
You didn't have 'Magic Spark 1d4 damage' you had 'laser beam that one-shots demons'.
You didn't cast 'Water Breathing' you cast 'I don't need air, water, food or any sustenance'.
They had a few spells only. They weren't managing cantrips like Light or Ventriloquism. Imagine starting at 1st level with a slot for one of those spells: Fireball, Fly, Invisibility or Wall of Ice. That would be vancian caster.
@vdonnut I think people in general undersell the power of 1st level spells. a 1d4 dmg spell can easily one-shot a normal person, Protection from Evil protects against all attacks by other alignments, Sleep can help killing a 4HD creature. sure, they are not demon-killing nukes, but if you assume a lower power level where most people are level 0 or 1, then even the level 1 spell list is full of powerful weapons
@kyonshi I mean, Charm Person and Sleep are ultimate bangers in this list. But the problem here is you neither have the power I mentioned earlier nor versatility - because once you prepare the spell you're stuck with it for a day.
@kyonshi I didn't mean it doesn't have it's merits. It is exactly the reason players hate it. Relatively low power and low versatility equals unhappy players XD
Also higher levels grant a lot of slots and require managing them every adventuring day.
