Last Christmas in Iceland

Unfortunately we will not be working for a few months at least in Iceland - our small house is being lent to a family who have had to move because of volcanic activity and it really is not very big! But if you get the chance, it is a wonderful place to be.

And yes, a wetuit is not necessary if you choose the right pool.

Swimming in a warm(ish) pond about 20k outside of the capital.

@Wen Beautiful. Nice of you to lend your house to people. 🙏🏼

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@DanielleVossebeld Well least we could do. Mild disappointment but I’ll work over video.

DanielleVossebeld,
@DanielleVossebeld@mastodon.social avatar

@Wen You have work in Iceland?

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@DanielleVossebeld I run a small analytics business. We have three Icelandic employees. My partner also works with people at Reykjavik university. All things being equal we would be spending the next 8 months there.

DanielleVossebeld,
@DanielleVossebeld@mastodon.social avatar

@Wen oh, that is kind of difficult without a place to stay. What kind of analytics do you do?

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@DanielleVossebeld We are all mathematicians so we basically analyse complex systems of all sorts (power, manufacturing, ecologies and medicine amongst other things) and develop models that can be used to help prediction and control.

DanielleVossebeld,
@DanielleVossebeld@mastodon.social avatar

@Wen Interesting! What is the most difficult model you had to make?

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@DanielleVossebeld the most complex system was one that included human behaviours, computing resources and physical locations. Actually the models we created were relatively simple - developing the models and then paring them down to essentials is the name of the game. Mathematicians are naturally lazy - a trait that leads to understandable and simple models (at least as simple as can represent the essential dynamics of the system). 4 months work for 5 of us.

DanielleVossebeld,
@DanielleVossebeld@mastodon.social avatar

@Wen Do you check the models with the reality? With humans in your system, are you able to get close to the behaviour of the real system?

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@DanielleVossebeld of course - they are assessed on their ability to predict systems performance. Of course it is a continuous refinement process. We actually do have a number of mathematically inclined psychologists and a sociologist in the team.

The bulk of our work is within the EU, so you can imagine how Brexit was viewed, from both a business and cultural viewpoint, most of us are multilingual and more than half work outside Scotland.

DanielleVossebeld,
@DanielleVossebeld@mastodon.social avatar

@Wen Do you have more info or research on those approaches that is available? 👀

Brexit must be really weird when you’re stuck inside a ‘united’ kingdom. The relations with Iceland has not changed, or has it?

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@DanielleVossebeld I should add that most of us with U.K. citizenship have EU citizenship as well. And Germany was very accommodating when we shifted our HQ there, several people are already on their way to German citizenship.

Brexit presented a number of ‘challenges’ including uncertainty about data protection laws and the status of EU citizens in the U.K.

I look forward to Scotland rejoining, possibly via EFTA.

DanielleVossebeld,
@DanielleVossebeld@mastodon.social avatar

@Wen So weird that Brexit has such an impact on someone’s citizenship. I do hope Scotland will join the EU. Unfortunately, a large group in the Netherlands voted far right, so I am curious whether we will still be in the EU in a few years… 🫣

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@DanielleVossebeld I suspect the mess of Brexit might change minds. It has in France and Italy!

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@DanielleVossebeld I’ll forward a link to a public paper that outlines the approach from Hewlett Packard (several
of us worked for HP before they reached for the dark side).

https://www.hpl.hp.com/techreports/2003/HPL-2003-246.pdf

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@DanielleVossebeld we have come a long way since then. But needed to be outside HP to get there.

DanielleVossebeld,
@DanielleVossebeld@mastodon.social avatar

@Wen Nice that you have found a better place to do your work. Must give so much more energy?

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@DanielleVossebeld I founded the company. We have a rather different way of organising ourselves that suits mathematicians with an interest in combining work with other activities.

DanielleVossebeld,
@DanielleVossebeld@mastodon.social avatar

@Wen What kind of other activities?

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@DanielleVossebeld most of us enjoy the outdoors and also contribute to social programs that we believe are important. We are very flexible and trust people to self manage.

DanielleVossebeld,
@DanielleVossebeld@mastodon.social avatar

@Wen Wow, that sounds like an ideal job. You must be proud to have created a company like that?

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@DanielleVossebeld it has had its moments… lived on bread and water for a while!
