Catch42, in Reached a new milestone this past weekend: no need to gate check

Went to a friends wedding and decided that all I really needed was my wedding outfit, clothes for the trip back, and pajamas. So I decided to try out my new underseat bag. It all fit jacket, included! Which was good because one of my flights was on a little plane where most rollarboards had to be gate checked. If you click on the image you can see it, for some reason kbin is cropping the thumbnail

Genrawir, in Packing light tips

For me, it depends on where I am going exactly. For example, I rarely bring more than a single pair of shoes, unless I’m expecting to go somewhere formal or sandy. One set of clothes per day is usually enough, unless I’m expecting adverse conditions or laundry access. As far as space vs weight, space is fixed by the bag whereas weight is limited by what I can carry and for how long.

Just running through the days and any plans you know of should help, taking the expected climate into consideration for quantity of spares.

There are variables to consider. Will you be able to wash things in a tub/sink? You can take much less this way. Just wear the shoes that you wear in the plane. A pair of pants beyond what you wear in the plane. Shorts that match both pants. I wear nice, quality wool socks. I can wear them for more than one day.

I just spent a week on a river trip, and everything I took (including the boat) would fit in a checked bag. How big of a bag do you plan to take? I have also flown with a personal item only for a three day trip. How much do you really need to take?

👋🏻Pretty new here. Didn't even knew there was a subreddit, I also don't really use reddit much anymore.

DickPuncher, in Evergoods MHP 3.5L first impressions

Do you have any pics of it? I returned my CAS2 because I didn't enjoy the straps and the slightly smaller size, and I like the idea of the size of the mhp and the straps better.

Sylvestris,

I haven’t looked into how to post pictures on kbin without burdening the server. I’ll figure it out! What about the MHP would you like to see? I don’t own a CAS so I can’t speak to the differences, but I feel like the buckle in the middle of the straps would annoy me when sitting down.

DickPuncher,

You can probably upload it on imgur

Sylvestris,

So I think I figured it out. Imgur wouldn't let me register for some reason.

This is what I have in the small pocket:
IMG-2391.jpg

  • FFP2 mask
  • Radix One card wallet
  • Phone (left of the wallet in, but I took the pic with my phone)
  • Maxpedition Pocket Organizer Micro pouch. It holds a hair tie, bullet space pen, paper, Olight S1R baton flashlight, rescue blanket, ear plugs, Leatherman Juice S2 multitool, mini usb stick, a strip of pain meds, some band-aids and some cash.
  • 30ml deodorant spray bottle
  • keys on the key leash (just a few flat keys, no big car key)

It's easy to get to when not wearing the pack as you can see. When worn, it's a snug fit and a bit tight for the pouch. If you put less in this pocket, the main pocket has a bit more room.

Pictured here is how little fits in the main pocket when I add a 27 oz / 800ml waterbottle (Klean Kanteen reflect).

alternatively, it could fit a sweater and single use poncho (got it ages ago, won't replace it with single use):
IMG-2395.jpg

or a protein bar, 330ml / 11.6 oz drink, and rain jacket in the compression thing:
IMG-2396.jpg
The rain jacket was a bit of a pain to pull through, but this was just a cheap basic rain jacket. I'm sure some modern UL jacket would fit easier.

This is what it looks like with the jacket hanging out.

Happy to be here,

Chupachups, in Reached a new milestone this past weekend: no need to gate check

Hell yeah. That first taste of freedom from packing light is great. I remember the first time I realized I could stick with a single bag on a 10 day trip. It made the journey in Japan a lot more tolerable.

Over the years I've kept optimizing my setup more, and it has paid off in droves

Really just figuring out how to navigate through this fediverse, I hope more content is posted. I think I have a couple of posts on Reddit, but not interesting enough to repost here. I guess I can knoll my current go-bag to seed some content.

DickPuncher,

You could be a pioneer though
