Radxa's new HAT powers the ultimate 5 NAS, with room for four SATA drives in a tiny footprint, consuming 6-8W at idle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l30sADfDiM8

@geerlingguy How did the sustained writes go? Because in a different setup with a AMD Ryzen and desktop PSU I'm having problems (after replacing almost everything) with sustained writes and I'm suspecting is because of PSU not delivering enough power via 5V for this drives (Samsung QVO, that you budget 3-5W but they have a top of 5.5W according to Samsung). So test this with more than 500Gb of data to check that the power supply is enough

@geerlingguy This looks awesome, cost/energy-efficient, fast-enough, and I love my RPi5. I am looking to build a new SSD/NVMe NAS. Unforunately I'm still looking for a similar cost (non-ARM) option that can run official Proxmox & TrueNAS.

(Admitedly, I don't really need a big NAS OS, as my current NAS+Homelab is just a Miniforum X500 + 2.5G USB + Mediasonic HFR2-SU3S2 PRORAID 4 with Proxmox serving sshfs to remotes, and mounted as volumes into containers/vm's, but would be fun to try TrueNAS.)

@wook I would love to see TrueNAS on Arm :)

@geerlingguy random question about your nas build: with the ssd bracket attached, are you able to remove the drives (safely) all at once? Or do you have to disassemble the bracket and pull the drives one by one?

geerlingguy,
@geerlingguy@mastodon.social avatar

@JLW_the_Jobber Yes, but it's a bit iffy :D

The plugs are all just barely off 90°, so it feels shaky and I slowly go back and forth.

@geerlingguy so in short, NOT hotswappable (no idea why one would do that, but could be fun 🤣)

@geerlingguy@mastodon.social avatar

@JLW_the_Jobber it's always fun to hot swap anything!

@geerlingguy
Thanks for the great video!

I found interesting my own deep discomfort with watching you handle the boards with no ESD strap or mat. Had no idea I'd become such a fuddy-duddy.

@obot50549535 Heh, my Dad and I just put together a new workbench with an ESD mat too... I just don't have one on my main video area.

@geerlingguy adding this to Watch Later because I'm put off by the massive expense of commercial solutions, the still pretty high costs of home NAS devices, and the power footprint (and risk) of just repurposing old PC hardware. Something like this could not only sit silently on a bookshelf in my office but it also makes for a sort of objet d'art.

I want it!

@geerlingguy if that power budget is for the whole rig, it's impressive. there's raid cards for pci that burn that much power on their own on idle.

geerlingguy,
@geerlingguy@mastodon.social avatar

@zymurgic Heh, my HBA in my HL15 NAS burns 15W 24x7.

locasta,

@geerlingguy oooooh nice! Is it compatible with the Pi5 PoE HAT to make a PoE powered NAS?

geerlingguy,
@geerlingguy@mastodon.social avatar

@locasta You could possibly hack in a Waveshare PoE (F) hat with it's 12v output... it's not out of the power budget of PoE+, for sure.
