To be honest, there is no way a starship captain directs the ship using "degrees mark degrees". It would not be precise enough, for a start, and no way that it would make sense.

It would be like steering a car by constantly having to say "set course 243 degrees" and the like, rather than simply setting the sat nav.

It is one of the strangest features of I have tolerated.

@revk Yes, well, Gene was an Air Force man not a Navy man, and that was how you flew a plane. (Even to some extent now, though you'd more usually feed a set of waypoints to the FMS and it would calculate the right bearing to fly on including wind correction.)

@RogerBW @revk Would have loved to hear some ST:TNG-Waypoints. They always had bangers for planet names. Bringloid V, Strnad, Rekag-Seronia...

@revk there's no sat nav for uncharted space "where no one has gone before".
