Looking for modern (so 2000's onwards or at least no older than mid 1990's) Mystery / Romance that DOES NOT involve murder.

Does such a thing exist?

Reccs please !

I assume that Mystery / Romance as a hybrid genre already exists but am not sure... 🤷🏿‍♀️

I know that ' Romance & ' as a genre is a far spanning horizon...

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@Faintdreams Hmm, tricky. I think mystery tends to gravitate towards murder, or at least plausible murder, because of its shockingness.
Romances probably tend to happen in mystery stories more than mysteries tend to happen in romance stories. (van Dine was complaining that "There must be no love interest" in 1928.)

Random thought… let's say I find an open source application for Android or iOS. It has prebuilt packages in the relevant store.
How do I check that the packages have been built from the source I can see?
I think I can install Android Studio (or whatever), compile the whole thing, and compare the apk I get to the apk on my phone (already messy because extracting it from my phone is not always trivial, plus I can't do a simple binary diff because the store apk is signed…)
What about iOS?

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@dakkar If you use F-Droid, you know that they did this already.

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@dakkar The flow for F-Droid packages is: author sends F-Droid the build recipe, F-Droid builds the package from that recipe, that's what gets uploaded.

If someone offers you funding to research the military potential of N, the morally correct response is to spend the grant money on a team of assassins to take out those funders.

If we keep doing this long enough perhaps we can stop all this pointless military research and spend money on things that are good and useful.

@BigJackBrass The impression I get is that you have to convince him that this is a serious film. Do that, as in Pig, and he can be amazing. But if he thinks it's a Ghost Rider or a Renfield he'll phone it in with the Cage Rage

@DarkestKale @BigJackBrass I've read interviews with Scott Derrickson, who directed the 2008 remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still. He also talks about how much he cares about the original story. I assume there's a lot of coded blinking going on.

Just enough time on my tea break to cut out a couple of the test stickers I printed yesterday and slap them on one of my ukulele cases, mainly to test for durability.

No sign of smudging as I applied them, although I've yet to test the water resistance. I'm certainly happy with the appearance: they don't look out of place with the professionally printed stickers already on the case (but my goodness that orange is bright!).

Of all the stuff that a DM does, the most important one is to be the keeper of the secrets. To know (or have a way to find out) the off-screen canon game state. Like, the characters have a treasure chest that they haven’t opened. It’s your job as DM to know what’s in there.

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@Sandra This was why I never got on with World of Darkness, where every book was explicitly "this is just the view of one faction and may not be objectively true, what is truth man?".

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@Sandra Part of my GMing style is to internalise the deep lore and then work out what that would mean down on the small scale where the PCs are, and then as the campaign goes along the PCs will gradually get closer to the truth. If I don't have firm footing, it feels as though that's all flailing around and nothing really matters. Maybe a god did it? Who cares?

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@Sandra And RPGs thrive by leaning into cliché. (I mean, not without limit, but it's enough fun to be part of the story that the quality of the story itself can slump a bit and the game overall is still fun.)

Still feeling a little unnerved that the party appeared to make some progress in our Cthulhu Eternal investigation last night. We may be on the wrong track, I suppose, but the usual Whartson Hall method is to rope a red herring and ride it erratically into the sunset, whereas @RogerBW seems to have put his finger on a highly plausible possibility (given weight by the traditional Lovecraftian investigation marker: it prompted a handout from the GM).

Learning SQL and building a DB, and I'm primarily interested in searching text, am I better off with SQLite or Postgresql? The app will be entirely local so my first thought was SQLite, however Postgres seems to have better support for different search mechanisms (like trigram): https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27179479

Thoughts and/or advice welcome.

RogerBW, (edited )
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@zyd Postgres is definitely more powerful, but it comes with all the overhead of a permanent database server process, TCP/IP access, configuring cleanup, and so on. There are lots of jobs SQLite can't do, but when I'm writing something it can, that's what I tend to use.

When I pick up a wild ant such as this Camponotus pennsylvanicus minor worker I’m always anxious that I return her to her colony. I followed her after letting her go. She ran the full length of a football field then suddenly up a pole. Waiting there another ant of the same species. They fussed over each other. Grooming and feeding each other for several minutes. Then they tucked into a nook in the fence and went to sleep! I guess they won’t be taking me to their main nest today.

The sister she ran to find after the strange experience of running over my hand for a bit. They are feeding each other which ants do when nervous.
