In #Texas, #doctors face a real #SophiesChoice. They can either practice #medicine the way they’ve been taught, regardless of the personal consequences to themselves; they can try their best to comply with the arbitrary edicts of the #Republican state legislature and their own hapless medical board, and still risk #prison; or they can choose to leave the state of Texas and practice elsewhere.
You can’t practice ethical medicine there, and the laws make it unacceptably risky anyway. Leave, and let the voters decide what is actually important to them.
@mcnado I don't see how docs can stay as it requires them to violate medical ethics. Deciding to stay means consciously deciding to abandon the ethics they swore to uphold. I think the only reasonable choice is to leave for one of the many states that don't impose such an existential conflict of interests.
@slcw I think some folks stay out of a sense of duty to their patients. That is great in some cases, but this is a democracy, voters have a say, and you don’t fix systemic problems one patient at a time. You fix them at the ballot box.
@mcnado I think by staying, they're helping to prop up an unethical system that's been imposed by dangerous, right-wing, political ideologues who have no business making decisions about the application of medicine. They would do better to abandon the state en mass, and let this monstrous creation collapse. Such a show of force is the only language these partisan zealots acknowledge.
