The answer to the question of “What is the use case / why did you make for your 3rd party app?” Has to be more than simply “Because we can.”

There has to be a compelling reason for users to don this big piece of equipment, instead of simply pulling their phones out from their pocket, easily and quickly. If there isn’t then you’ve missed the point IMHO.

@gedeonm For now I think this is kind of like the first step on the moon. It may feel pointless and a "because we can" moment. But one day perhaps people will point to this moment as the birth of something new that shaped the future.
Or it won’t. It’s a bet on the future, as was the iPhone. And as was the Mac.

@dgavin the point is well taken, but it’s not like we haven’t stepped on the VR moon before. We’ve been exploring that space for almost 40 years and it hasn’t mounted anything mainstream or really useful. Can Apple change all that? If anyone can they can, but that is a big big question that remains to be seen.

@tchaten@mastodon.world avatar

@gedeonm Sure but also for many myself included who want this to be a primary computer would also like the boring stuff so I can do everything here even if it isn’t some super wow 3D app - want both the new and the apps of old to let me do it all here

gedeonm,
@gedeonm@mastodon.social avatar

@tchaten Sure. But unless devs can make a living porting those apps of old for the new platform however, this all will be moot. We all saw how this went for developers of Apple Watch sadly.

@gedeonm I am so completely wowed by the innovation, the cross-domain expertise, and the manufacturing and production of this device. But so completely underwhelmed by the premise of “computing, but spatial”. I think as an entertainment escape it will be unrivaled.

gedeonm,
@gedeonm@mastodon.social avatar

@incanus Yes, I can easily agree with that. That doesn’t mean I’ll need or want a virtual calendar, notepad, podcast app, to-do list and and on and on and on. I hate to 💩💩 anything at this early stage but I’m just not sold at all. I get the excitement of designing and developing for a whole new space but I personally could not justify the cost vs return of creating for it unless said app is in that entertainment space.

@incanus@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm I spend a non-insignificant amount of time studying the period of ~40 years ago when we were on the cusp of the PC & the computing that spatial computing promises to evolve. What was promised, what problems it was going to solve, how it was received, and how those metrics stack up today. And a lot of it seemed to be about replacing less efficient methods of work, making nicer the output of some kinds of work, and broadening education. On day one with the product. I don't see that here.

mrdaveanderson,

@gedeonm if you're banking on people finding other reasons to put the headset on, it still might be worth porting an app if you save someone taking the headset off to check something? I assume that would be the minority rather than the majority of usecases, but still plausible. Obviously this would only be a useful motive for apps that are easy to port.

gedeonm,
@gedeonm@mastodon.social avatar

@mrdaveanderson Yeah and if they are “easy” to port how compelling can they really be?

mrdaveanderson,

@gedeonm I don't think everything has to be compelling necessarily? If the point is a full fledged ecosystem...you'd want to be able to say, order DoorDash without taking it off and using your phone? Think of all the things you do on your phone while watching tv? You'd have to take the Vision Pro off to do anything that's not ported? (Assuming it's something that is much more annoying or impossible to use in safari)

Don't get me wrong, I don't have one, nor do I want one, I just know needlessly switching devices is a) something that is very annoying and b) maybe just as likely to kill a platform as anything else :)

gedeonm,
@gedeonm@mastodon.social avatar

@mrdaveanderson This assumes you’re leaving it on for long long periods of time and not “emerging”. I’m sure Apple would love that but honestly I don’t see people wearing Vision Pro for more than a few hours at a time no matter what they are doing. And if you are not already wearing it, I’m certainly not putting it on just to order Door Dash so… catch 22 there.

@gedeonm I’m thinking it’s 7-10 yrs before I can find a use case for this device at all. This from someone who owns much Apple hardware.

octothorpe,
@octothorpe@mastodon.online avatar

@gedeonm question you or maybe someone reading may know… when in ‘giant laptop monitor’ mode… is it literally that? Mouse and everything? The screenshots/videos I’ve seen simply have a static ‘full screen’ app doing nothing.

gedeonm,
@gedeonm@mastodon.social avatar

@octothorpe I’m sorry but I don’t actually know. Apologies.
