I really wish they gave the Series S 1TB from the start, it's a pain to juggle around games without any expansion. At least it got a tiny bit cheaper though.
You can use external drives, but they can't be used with games that need higher speeds. Or that have been deemed "Series S/X", even if they are tiny indie games that absolutely don't require lightning fast access speeds.
So the 1 TB external storage card costs about $150. Whereas with this model of Series S, you’re getting and additional ~500 GB for and additional $50. Meaning you’re “saving” (if you’re spending money, you aren’t saving it) $25.
I dramatically prefer PS5’s way of upgrading storage. Mostly because I can get expansion cards from multiple vendors, and especially with sales and what not, a lot cheaper.
