SecretPancake,

RIP Affinity I guess

requiem,

Here’s what they wrote to users in an email:

To our amazing Affinity community,

Today marks a momentous new chapter in our journey together.

I am thrilled to announce that Affinity is joining the Canva family.

This is a moment of great excitement, anticipation, and profound gratitude for all of you who have been part of our story so far.

We know that those of you who’ve put your faith in Affinity, some since we launched our very first Mac app, will have questions about what this means for the future of our products. Since the inception of Affinity, our mission has been to empower creatives with tools that unleash their full potential, fostering a community where innovation and artistry flourish. We’ve worked tirelessly to challenge the status quo, delivering professional-grade creative software that is both accessible and affordable.

None of that changes today.

Etc.

The last word is what I am really worried about: today. It doesn’t change today, but what about 6 months from now?

This is a really really worrying development. The best selling point of Affinity products was the lack of subscription. I am convinced this will be the end of owning or software. I abandoned Adobe for a reason, I will be sad to abandon this excellent piece of software when the subscription model comes in.

whereisk,

Oh shit… here comes the subscription service.

Boooo

M500,

I literally usa canva everyday. It’s such a great tool. Although their app can sometimes be slow to load things, but I think that’s a problem with my isp.

I don’t know I have a need for affinity tools, but I hope it’s added for free or is an optional upgrade. I’d hate that to raise my subscription price

I use Canva at work and generally find it absolute crap

M500,

It could be improved in many ways, but I don’t know any alternatives.

When it comes to page layout it can't even wrap text around an image. Almost any WP is better

nokturne213,

I bought affinity because canva was so bad.

M500,

I’m using Canva for creating slides. Isnt affinity like photoshop?

AlgonquinHawk,

They have three pieces of software. One is a photo editor. The other is a vector graphic designer, and the third is a page layout software.

Each has their place. I use Pixelmator, Affinity Designer, Sketch, and occasionally Gimp and Photoshop. Canva is really good at doing things like throwing together a flyer. I used to create social media posts for a pre-school and Canva was super easy to create templates that lay folks could edit. Virtually no learning curve.

Affinity is my vector tool of choice currently but these space seems to be a field with lots of options.

Does it mean the end of no subscription professional editing suite or is it a good thing?

I can’t see how it could be good… I wasn’t even aware Canva has so much money it can buy Affinity. Now this is a bummer

IWantToFuckSpez,

Bet it’s all VC funding. Bet they don’t even make profit. They are just trying to fatten their value by buying other companies to increase their share price at the IPO

It doesn’t look good. Canva is a web based subscription service. It also targets a fairly different market from Affinity.

This could easily end badly for Affinity users. Sad times.

coffeebiscuit,

Probably… I sure as hell hope not. This was one of the reasons to ditch adobe.
