Shurimal, Very niche, but if you ever need to decode a simple oldschool encrypted/encoded text (caesar cipher, reverse alphabet, substitution cipher, morse code etc) for an AR game or whatever, Canonn Decryptor is amazing, being able to decode most cryptograms virtually automatically.
Glitchington,
DharmaCurious, Is this like the digital equivalent of a million monkeys with a million typewriters?
Glitchington, Basically, except it’s indexed and searchable. Somewhere in those books, exists the phrase, “dharma curious updooted glitchington on lemmy” probably many times. But also “dharma curious hated glitchingtons post on lemmy” will also be there somewhere.
DharmaCurious, Wait, it’s already there? I thought they were generating them currently?
Also, it’s searchable? I didn’t notice that. Just hit random. Going to go check it again!
Tlaloc_Temporal, And also “every finite number is contained within PI” but with words.
DharmaCurious, Okay, cool! I had some fun looking for words in the pages. But if I understand it correctly, what we’ll end up with individual words surrounded with gibberish on the pages. You’re never going to get a page full of real words, right?
PoolloverNathan, Every possible page is generated somewhere. I think there’s a checkbox on the search page that fills the rest of the query with spaces.
sukhmel, I haven’t looked at it yet but if u understand correctly you just have to search for a page where surrounding gibberish is also words. Probability plummets to zero fast, I’d guess
sukhmel, That statement may be false, a simple explanation is that if you make a number out of π by removing all 9s it will keep the properties of π being infinite and non-repeating but never contain 9.
bela, deleted_by_author
glukoza, PI is not proven to be normal number. It means that those infinite digits repeating may not have uniform distribution, so somewhere far away in PI you can start just getting 1s,2s and 3s for example.
sukhmel, The point is that just because π is infinite it isn’t guaranteed to have any combination of numbers in it
FishFace, This is equivalent to the assertion that pi is a normal number, which is not proven.
ICastFist, I thought humanity was the “million monkeys with a million typewriters”
captain_aggravated, Yeah sorta. It’s apparently an algorithm that can produce every possible page of text, given a number. So it contains a staggering amount of gibberish, plus every page of every book that’s ever been written, and many wildly incorrect, many vaguely correct and one exactly accurate description of the circumstances of your death.
Floufym, For French speaking ppl : estcequejeanmarielepenestmort.info
It is a website that tell you if Jean-Marie Lepen, far right islamophobic racist guy that created the far right party that is now going to win the election, is dead or not.
PlanetOfOrd, jmp.chat - cell phone number without the need for ID verification.
lingh0e, OG movie script/screenplay database.
Dudes been running this place since 95, which is doubly impressive that he never got popped for copyright shit. There was a pretty crazy stretch where he was releasing scripts before they were even produced. Like I got to read the actual screenplays for flicks like Intolerable Cruelty, Lost Highway (movie makes more sense as a screenplay, btw) and even Beavis and Butthead Do America before they even hit the theaters.
LazyPhilosopher, Photoshop in your browser for free: www.photopea.com
Octopus1348, Another website with a similar goal: jspaint.app
It’s a M$ Paint clone and I use it because I don’t have Windows.
Pyroglyph, If by that you mean “I use Linux but can’t stand GIMP” then Pinta is pretty good as a simple photo editor. More advanced than Paint but not as unfriendly as GIMP. If you’re familiar with Paint.NET on Windows then you’ll feel right at home.
Octopus1348, (edited ) I also used Pinta but don’t remember what worked for me, Pinta or Krita. I use one of them mostly for making icons transparent. I just thought I’d also drop JSPaint here, that was the first one I found.
csm10495, Let’s you sort prepaid phone plans in the US. You can even sort by things like which carrier the mvno runs on or if it’s unlimited slow data after your allocation.
It’s wonderful!
postmateDumbass, Straight from the late 90s…
Landmammals, The website for the Heaven’s Gate suicide cult is still up, 27 years after they all killed themselves.
CozMedic1, I wonder who’s renewing the domain? I guess I could do an ICANN lookup for registrar info, but I’m lazy.
LazyPhilosopher, I saw in a documentary that a few of the cult members were ordered to stay alive to keep the site up. Apparently you can email them and talk to them too.
JustUseMint, 💀 imagine being told as the IT team for the suicide cult that your job is to tirelessly maintain a site and renew the domain and SSL cert for eternity and provide Q&A
MiikCheque,
Mrkawfee, I used to have this as a live wallpaper. Drained my battery like crazy.
flubba86, Man, that’s like saying “when I’m driving my car, whenever I pull up to a traffic light I drop it into neural and floor the throttle”.
Barack_Embalmer,
JustUseMint, No fucking way this is still around lmfaooo I remember being around 12 years old when my buddy first showed me this.
barlafus,
jol, This is my favourite website ever. Don’t forget to visit the archive. The quality of this authors posts is astronomical. The way they explain extremely complex Systems in a simple and visual manner is absolutely brilliant.
barlafus, I think the first post I found was the clock one and it’s still my favourite
Otherwise_Direction7, www.webstandards.org/files/acid2/test.html
These websites were made to test out if your installed web browser is compliant with the worldwide web standards. It’s pretty neat stuff
jol, Ironically they no longer work properly.
ShadowFox, (edited ) Basically a model viewer/freecam for stages from various video games. Really neat to see the tricks various devs pull to conserve detail.
RaoulDook, Cool!
SocialMediaRefugee, (edited ) The timecube website was the peak of the internet
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_Cube
web.archive.org/web/…/timecube.com/
Edit:
Omg I found an interview with Gene!
Jtotheb, Hey, since you know of this, is there any chance you’ve also seen the “moon is manufactured” website? Something about how it was a message, and intentionally designed because how else could it perfectly eclipse the sun. Haven’t been able to turn it up since about 2014
SocialMediaRefugee, (edited ) Missed that one! While trying to look it up I did stumble on a “scientist” who claimed, before the moon landings, that the moon was plasma and not rock. They couldn’t find him again for a follow up interview after the landing.
JustUseMint, That site is pure schizophrenia/dementia Jesus but it sure is interesting. Also sad. If you read the wiki it says he went to universities to do talks and would challenge people to prove him wrong. No one did.
SocialMediaRefugee, How can you disprove a hallucination?
He gets really pissy and racist on page 2
