Once I get to the middle game I can handle myself (around lichess 1900) but I'm only doing 2 openings and its getting boring.
I don't know where to start to study openings, mostly because as a casual player I don't want to but if someone could suggest something I would really appreciate it.
For whatever my opinion is worth (I'm ~1350 blitz on lichess), if you're finding your openings boring, then just try something new. For me, it helps to keep in mind that the goal is to have fun, NOT to maintain a certain Elo.
I mostly play Rapid (currently 810 on chess.com, 1300 on lichess), my blitz elo’s in the 500s because 99% of the time when I play with 3 mins I lose on time and/or immediately hang my queen lol.
I almost always play the King’s Pawn, and when playing black I always respond to 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 with either 4 Knights Game or the French. And when I’m White and don’t play that opening, I play the Spanish Game followed by doubling their pawns and then o-o.
I sort of know the Catalan but it’s a bit too passive for my liking (often starts with g3) and I myself know how to punish it as Black
What do you play right now? You could watch the current Naroditsky speedrun and emulate his opening choices for example. This way you get videos of several model games with explanations and analysis and learn this way - so no need to study much of theory.
