Thoughts on the Amazon Scribe?

Here's a review I liked: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aooJosgGGw

For me, the thing that sets it a part is the fact that it has a 300 PPI screen, which is significantly more than the 226 PPI of the Remarkable, Supernote, and Onyx Boox. However, it looks like they're missing a lot of features, like exporting / backup of notes and options for pen types and thicknesses. I'm curious how much Amazon will invest into developing the Scribe as a true note-taking and productivity tool, since right now it mostly seems like a large e-reader that happens to be come with a pen.

untilyouarrived,

The screen on the scribe is beautiful. The lighting is uniform and the text is crisp. PDFs look amazing. It's streets ahead of the Boox Note Air line in that respect.

Note-taking has got better since release, but it's still rudimentary compared to dedicated note-taking devices. I'm sure that will continue to improve over time, but I'm just not sure that I want Amazon to have my notes.

Also, I discovered that I really don't like writing on an artificially lit screen. It doesn't feel as natural as writing on my RM2, which is closer to paper in feel and appearance.

That's what I've heard too! And this is the biggest reason I was tempted to get it.... but I think at this point I need to wait for there to be better writing tools available.

Re the lit screen; is it not the same as the kindle where it's just a optional lighting from the sides? Is it not able to be turned off?

untilyouarrived,

You can turn it off (which, admittedly, resolves my issue) but the lighting layer creates a gap between the writing surface and the screen. It's only slight, but is perceptible.

It's a great device though.
