I actually used ex rather than ed. It was confusing, though, when I accidentally switched to vi mode on a 212A modem (1200 bps).

@gdinwiddie i no longer remember - is that 1200 bauds or 1200 bytes/sec (9600 baud)?

my first modem was 9600 baud, but quickly got replaced with a 28.8

miss those theme-tunes. very techno.

The 212A was 1200 bits per second data rate, but 600 baud because it sent 2 bits per signal (differential phase shift) across the line.

Your 9600bps was likely 2400 baud, quadrature amplitude modulation.

In 1980, I was working at Rixon helping develop hardware for a 'high speed' 9600bps 4-wire leased line modem. We were designing a chip to do phoneline equalization in the digital domain with a transversal filter. I learned a lot in that job, including what complex numbers were for. 😃
