🚨INTERNET SHUTDOWNS🚨

One of the very cool (but sad) parts of my job with @internetsociety is writing up "incident pages" for our Pulse platform about government-mandated or blocking of services.

This week there were THREE! Iraq, Mauritania, and Senegal

IRAQ continued the incredibly stupid (IMHO) process of TURNING OFF THE FOR THE ENTIRE COUNTRY for four hours so that students couldn't cheat on exams!! 🤦‍♂️🤯🤦‍♂️ - https://pulse.internetsociety.org/shutdowns/despite-cost-to-economy-iraq-imposes-internet-shutdown-during-exams

🚨INTERNET SHUTDOWNS (cont'd)🚨

MAURITANIA turned off mobile Internet because of large-scale protests after the death of a young boy in police custody - https://pulse.internetsociety.org/shutdowns/mauritania-blocks-mobile-internet-during-protests

SENEGAL blocked instant messaging and social networks after protests spread across the nation after a leading opposition candidate was sentenced to jail - https://pulse.internetsociety.org/shutdowns/senegal-blocks-social-media-and-instant-messaging-amidst-protests

And this is on top of the government recently blocking some services because of protests... and before that!

We track all these at:

https://pulse.internetsociety.org/shutdowns

We believe that shutdowns harm people, societies, economies, and the Internet's infrastructure:

We and our partners and allies want governments to !

Sadly, I think I'll be writing these pages for a while.. 🙁

P.S. And even though the Ministry of Communications made positive comments about keeping the on during student exams, the Ministry of Education seems to have overruled that. Current information is that they will be shutting off the Internet for four-hour blocks for maybe 10 or more days over the next few weeks!
