Our interpretation of internet access must be as a universal, equitable, and non-discriminatory right, intrinsic to societal participation and personal development, not a commodity to be bought and sold for profit."

Q - do you know of well-researched articles, or academic papers, that explore the risks to the Internet’s infrastructure due to climate change?

I.e. how do we keep the Internet functioning in the midst of extreme weather and other aspects of climate change? For example, if sea levels rise, what will that do to subsea cable landing stations?

I am building a list of articles and papers, and I have some.. but am looking for more.

Thanks!

It's very disappointing that potentially as many as 60 million US citizens may lose their affordable Internet access because the US Congress has politicized things and so far failed to act:

What's going with the Internet in western and southern Africa right now?

A lot of the region is currently experiencing Internet outages. @radar and IODA are both tracking the outages:

(hat tip to @dbelson for his great CloudflareRadar work!)

There are multiple reports on Twitter/X about "subsea cable cuts" from telecom companies... but even they are not definitive.

Anyone seeing clear statements?

A major factor in closing the digital divide is creating more reliable Internet access that is affordable. Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) and local traffic are critical to help with this.

Over the past 10 years in the DRC, we can see the dramatic impact that IXPs had on access⬇️

In about 1 hour (2pm ET) I'll be on a livestream with David Belson ( @dbelson ) to discuss #Internet shutdowns and disruptions. We'll discuss his latest blog post about disruptions in Q4 of 2023, and I'll also provide some insight from what we are seeing at the Internet Society's Pulse platform (https://pulse.internetsociety.org/ ) It should be a good discussion!

Feel free to join in and listen! It will also be recorded for later viewing.

@Techmeme - It’s no surprise to see HughesNet, a traditional satellite provider, trying to compete with for providing , but this article doesn’t mention until the very end the HUGE challenge they have… latency. The distance to geostationary (“GEO”) orbit is so great that a packet takes at least 600ms - and usually more.

With that… no video calls, e-sports, or anything else real-time.

Latency is the key! And LEOs win over GEOs.

When you are a #RemoteWorker, and you lose #InternetAccess, there’s not much you can do. Comcast #Xfinity seems to be having an outage in my little corner of northwest #Vermont … so.. might as well take the weekend’s yard waste up to the biomass generator plant. 😃 Hopefully it will be back on by the time I get back… or else I will be off to our local library……..

As much as I am excited about the opportunities provided by LEO satellite systems to provide and , one of my big concerns has been what happens as all these satellites burn up in the upper atmosphere. All these LEO sats only have about a 5 year lifespan… then they “de-orbit” and burn up. What will the effects be? What will be doing to our planet?

Glad to see attention being paid to this…
