The Iraqi government announced over the weekend that the Internet will be shut down nationally during the upcoming exam period, per the Ministry of Education's request. Join the call for #NoExamShutdowns
"The gap between those with and without fast, secure and neutral #internetaccess has profound implications for their ability to participate in and contribute to society.
Our interpretation of internet access must be as a universal, equitable, and non-discriminatory right, intrinsic to societal participation and personal development, not a commodity to be bought and sold for profit." #UniversalRight
Q - do you know of well-researched articles, or academic papers, that explore the risks to the Internet’s infrastructure due to climate change?
I.e. how do we keep the Internet functioning in the midst of extreme weather and other aspects of climate change? For example, if sea levels rise, what will that do to subsea cable landing stations?
I am building a list of articles and papers, and I have some.. but am looking for more.
It's very disappointing that potentially as many as 60 million US citizens may lose their affordable Internet access because the US Congress has politicized things and so far failed to act:
A major factor in closing the digital divide is creating more reliable Internet access that is affordable. Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) and local traffic are critical to help with this.
Over the past 10 years in the DRC, we can see the dramatic impact that IXPs had on access⬇️
There have been reports of mobile and Internet disruptions across multiple service providers in Pakistan today as its people head to the polls for national elections. See our coverage on our Pulse site:
The Connecting the Unconnected funding program from the Internet Society Foundation supports organizations working to build and expand Internet infrastructure to connect people living in rural, remote, and low-income areas.
The program focuses on projects building new complementary access solutions and expanding existing complementary access solutions.
In about 1 hour (2pm ET) I'll be on a livestream with David Belson ( @dbelson ) to discuss #Internet shutdowns and disruptions. We'll discuss his latest blog post about disruptions in Q4 of 2023, and I'll also provide some insight from what we are seeing at the Internet Society's Pulse platform (https://pulse.internetsociety.org/ ) It should be a good discussion!
Feel free to join in and listen! It will also be recorded for later viewing.

@Techmeme - It’s no surprise to see HughesNet, a traditional satellite provider, trying to compete with #Starlink for providing #InternetAccess, but this article doesn’t mention until the very end the HUGE challenge they have… latency. The distance to geostationary (“GEO”) orbit is so great that a packet takes at least 600ms - and usually more.
With that… no video calls, e-sports, or anything else real-time.
PEDi is also supported by service providers such as Telekom #Malaysia, CelcomDigi, Maxis and Redtone, providing #elearning programmes for less privileged #students.
When you are a #RemoteWorker, and you lose #InternetAccess, there’s not much you can do. Comcast #Xfinity seems to be having an outage in my little corner of northwest #Vermont … so.. might as well take the weekend’s yard waste up to the biomass generator plant. 😃 Hopefully it will be back on by the time I get back… or else I will be off to our local library……..
(Posting from my mobile while away from home. I unfortunately have almost zero mobile coverage at my house.)
As much as I am excited about the opportunities provided by LEO satellite systems to provide #InternetAccess and #ConnectTheUnconnected, one of my big concerns has been what happens as all these satellites burn up in the upper atmosphere. All these LEO sats only have about a 5 year lifespan… then they “de-orbit” and burn up. What will the effects be? What will be doing to our planet?
Fears that #Israel or international partners could pressure #Egypt into accepting millions of #Palestinians settling in the #Sinai have abounded for decades in #Cairo: #HosniMubarak strenuously denied reports in 2017 that he had cut a deal with #MargaretThatcher in 1983 to resettle Palestinians exiled in Lebanon in the peninsula, adding that #BenjaminNetanyahu, had also proposed the idea in 2010.
“#Starlink terminals or dishes in #Gaza would be difficult to smuggle in and distribute at scale. The Israeli government is unlikely to allow legal imports of it,” Owen Jones told Al Jazeera.
“But let’s say Starlink got in. How will it be powered? There is no #fuel in Gaza right now.” #Israel#InternetAccess
