New perspective on games after a replay

I replayed Xenogears last year. While it remains one of my favorites, I was surprised at how much more I enjoyed the infamous Disc 2 this time around. Yes, it’s a condensed version of what we could have had, but there are still some great story beats and really touching scenes in there. Meanwhile, the gameplay throughout the game still continues to age rather poorly. That story is still so great, though.

More recently, I picked up Terranigma again. I think it’s gone down a couple notches in my estimation. It’s more grindy than I remembered, and some of the writing hasn’t aged well. Plenty about this game hits different now that I’m a bit older, though.

Have you all replayed any JRPGs lately that had you change your mind on them a bit? Or even a lot?

Old 2D action RPG’s like Secret and Sword of Mama doesn’t age that properly in my opinion. Or even Star ocean Games have a kind of messed up battle system, but that wasn’t a replay. But i recognised, that older games have more fun momemts, characters doesn’t take themself serious and do a lot emotes to show that charm. But it’s about replaying games, not old games, so usually i replay games that are quite good in my opinion, like Persona 5, Final Fantasy X and some Fire Emblem games. And i’m always surprised how good they really are compared to some mid games i play.

Ashtear,

I struggle so much with old action RPGs, Secret of Mana in particular. Feels like they age super quick. At least the very first Mana has that classic Zelda-style feel to it!

z3r0_Geek,

For me is Final Fantasy IX. You can think the story is quite naive at the first gameplay, but on later replays I noticed that some characters have a deepest plot than I though the first time. I cannot tell much more without spoilers

Ashtear,

This is one I’ve been thinking about trying again to see if I can connect with the characters more. Haven’t played through it since 2001 because I couldn’t handle the slow combat. However, I just went through Lost Odyssey, and FF9 is not much slower than that is.

z3r0_Geek,

Yeeeah… I’ve heard a lot of people nowdays complaining about the combat system and the ridiculous amount of random combats. Even the bosses weren’t a great challenge because the most difficult thing you can do in boss combats is trying to steal all the items from them. Maybe if had tried to play it nowdays for the first time would never be able finish it.
