if i noticed something when talking with outspoken pro-nuclear people it's that you really can't trust anything they say. they are intellectually bankrupt, will use all kinds of shady argumentation tactics, ad hominems, and can't even be bothered to write their own arguments (instead using AI for that)

but they do expect you to provide sources.

I wouldn't trust anything from them

@kyonshi this seems rather harsh. I don't use AI, but also don't have my own arguments. I just went with the broader Physics community.

kyonshi,
@kyonshi@dice.camp avatar

@malin yep, it does seem rather harsh.

but I also don't see you post stuff about how stupid the people of Fukushima were to evacuate

malin,
@malin@dice.camp avatar

@kyonshi we can support nuclear energy without putting it by a population, next to tsunami, with occasional earthquakes. Godzilla's the least of the worries there.

kyonshi,
@kyonshi@dice.camp avatar

...especially no argument that includes putting a glorified steam engine into your area that might make your whole region uninhabitable if it blows.

Fywillan,
@Fywillan@dice.camp avatar

@kyonshi At this point I'm really curious as to how do you think a coal or gas power plant works.

kyonshi,
@kyonshi@dice.camp avatar

@Fywillan the same, just without it having a nuclear reactor core.

kyonshi,
@kyonshi@dice.camp avatar

@Fywillan what notably doesn't work the same is wind and solar energy though

Fywillan,
@Fywillan@dice.camp avatar

@kyonshi They also don't well enough to provide for the world's energy needs, so disparaging the methods that are actually capable of doing their job seems a bit ass-backwards to me.

kyonshi,
@kyonshi@dice.camp avatar

@Fywillan if they work so well, why do their proponents need to use AI generated text to flood the discussions about it?

Fywillan,
@Fywillan@dice.camp avatar

@kyonshi Probably because they are tired of arguing the same points over and over again.

kyonshi,
@kyonshi@dice.camp avatar

@Fywillan if they feel the need to argue then they should feel the need to make their own points.

if they don't they obviously are not convinced about them themselves

kyonshi,
@kyonshi@dice.camp avatar

@Fywillan and as you might notice, I am not actually angry about the nuclear part

Fywillan,
@Fywillan@dice.camp avatar

@kyonshi I don't know, you seem pretty angry about the possibility of someone building a nuclear plant in your city.

kyonshi,
@kyonshi@dice.camp avatar

@Fywillan frankly, I doubt that would happen considering there's no free-flowing natural water to cool it. I am more concerned about them minimizing the dangers inherent in those plants with cheap tactics.

Fywillan,
@Fywillan@dice.camp avatar

@kyonshi Thing is, the plants themselves are really not that dangerous unless the government is corrupt as all hell and allows them to be built where they shouldn't (Fukushima) or allows a bunch of incompetents to run them (Chernobyl). And if your government can't be trusted with something that can erase an entire town from the map, then you have bigger problems than nuclear energy.

kyonshi,
@kyonshi@dice.camp avatar

@Fywillan now tell me: is there really a government in the world that you would trust with that?

because if it was up to me I wouldn't trust any of them, but especially with something so complex and dangerous corruption and incompetence are always going to be an issue.

kyonshi,
@kyonshi@dice.camp avatar

@Fywillan I know the plants are not that dangerous.

that is until they are.

Fywillan,
@Fywillan@dice.camp avatar

@kyonshi Well, yes, most of them. I mean even Hungary managed to not blow themselves up, and they are nothing if not a bunch of incompetent corrupt bastards.

kyonshi,
@kyonshi@dice.camp avatar

@Fywillan well, I guess it comes down to you having more faith in humans than I sometimes have

Fywillan,
@Fywillan@dice.camp avatar

@kyonshi Humans are amazing as long as they can be held responsible for their actions. Notice how both nuclear meltdowns happened in countries where the political elite is much more entrenched than in the west. And while our politicians can get away with way more than they should, they wouldn't be able to get away with irradiating large swathes of their own country.

kyonshi,
@kyonshi@dice.camp avatar

@Fywillan it's always a talking point that they don't provide enough for the world's energy needs. from what I can see there is plenty of untapped potential but no will to invest into it.

kyonshi,
@kyonshi@dice.camp avatar

actually, I am not categorically against nuclear power, I am just against nuclear shills that try to minimize the dangers it has with bad faith arguments.

@kyonshi I'm not anti-nuke by any stretch, but the vocal pro-nuke types (like vocal atheists, vocal Christians, vocal …) always make me cringe.
