@acm_redfox those are air intakes! they pipe fresh air into an area where HVAC may not be working.

acm_redfox,
@acm_redfox@jawns.club avatar

@mitch huh! but... aren't they stiff because air is going out? do you think they might have jury-rigged them for covid or some other reason wanting outward pressure?

mitch,
@mitch@posts.dumb.stuff.donaberger.xyz avatar

@acm_redfox Dunno. But that's why there's slits at the end.

acm_redfox,
@acm_redfox@jawns.club avatar

@mitch Yeah, I can tell it's designed for controlled air flow. I just can't imagine... for what. Maybe they were cooking up a heap of something and wanted extra venting. Or maybe somebody has covid and they wanted the room to have negative pressure. Or... 🤷

@acm_redfox i've just seen them mostly used when HVAC in a tower or tenement is out in the summer. the passing wind brings cool air in.

acm_redfox,
@acm_redfox@jawns.club avatar

@mitch cool! had no idea. and they're out the window like this?

mitch,
@mitch@posts.dumb.stuff.donaberger.xyz avatar

@acm_redfox yep! you see them in brooklyn all the time. old buildings.

@mitch @acm_redfox
It‘s an air vent to prevent cold air to flow into the building. As long as the fan is pushing air out of the building the plastic tubes remain inflated and the air will escape via the slits. When the fans are turned off, the tubes will deflate and lean against the card board. Effectivly blocking cold air to reverse flow into the building.

@waldorf @mitch Ok, I get that part. But why would they be using this, for just a couple of days, in their house? Just drying a leak, or something more substantial?

waldorf,
@waldorf@troet.cafe avatar

@acm_redfox @waldorf @mitch
I don‘t know the location (industrial or living) and the condition of the house. My best guess is humidity and forced ventilation to prevent fungus.
Is there a relation to rain/humidity and or cold weather.

@mitch@posts.dumb.stuff.donaberger.xyz avatar

@waldorf @acm_redfox yeah i was gonna say, likely someone who has to have the windows open with fans blowing, like mold remediation.
