evil_opossum,

Well then I guess I’m not the only one noticing this. I seriously thought it was a setting I had disabled or something. Also I’m noticing the audio is always super low no matter what I watch.

Enhancer for YouTube has been helpful but man it’s annoying

Galluf,

If you’ve got an Nvidia GPU, the up scaling option works surprisingly well. I’m amazed at how good it is.

The only doelwnside is high GPU power draw for it. On my 3080 it’s like 150 W and goes up to 65 degrees C.

Uncle_Iroh,

Oh no my free service is trying to be profitable!

We’ve become too entitled. Just pay for premium (it’s not that expensive) or deal with the downsides that come with using free services.

Hosting video’s and streaming is really expensive. Support the platforms you use when possible.

Joe_Moose,

I’ve also noticed a recent drop in YouTube quality, especially on my TV’s app. But I do pay for premium because the ads were just too much.

weedazz,

I also pay for premium and have noticed the dropoff in quality on my tv

Imhotep,

I watch most content in 720p, it’s often enough. If there’s some text to read I’ll up the resolution.

How much more power is used from watching 4k content? I’d be curious to know the carbon footprint

RisingSwell,

For 4k? Fuckloads. Like, an insane amount of difference. Just in bandwidth it’s just shy of 10x 720p on average.

I’ve got YouTube premium, had it for years because I used to use Google Play Music and at some point YouTube Premium got bundled in.

They also automatically reduce resolution for each video. I have a 1440p ultra wide display, yet every single video I have to manually select a higher resolution because they bump the video down to 720p, and sometimes below.

I have a 500mbit connection, and a computer built this year. It’s not that I can’t stream 1080p content.

Plaid_Kaleidoscope,

Exact same thing for me. Bumps me all the way down to 480 sometimes on premium, with a gig connection and such. It’s ridiculous.

RisingSwell,

I get the opposite, i typically want between 240p and 480p, and occasionally a video will just not even get close to loading, and then i realise it’s on 1440p for some stupid reason.

Imhotep,

There’s an extension (YouTube enhanced?) that will let you select the default resolution, among other things

zaph,

Enhancer for YouTube is the one I use on Firefox.

ConfuzedAZ,

It’s not free though. You pay for it by watching those awful ads. Assuming you don’t use ad blockers like most people. 😁

t0lo,

They claim it’s the same and the premium tier is just faster but I’m not sure. It’s difficult to profit off of streaming and hosting so I’m not surprised

nerdschleife,

It’s definitely worse than before. It’s most noticeable on fast moving images such as motorsport videos (with still cam)
