Indeed. I use ViM for just about anything, except filling out administrative paperwork.

How many MSWord documents do you get from your institution's administration?

Even LibreOffice is missing this basic feature: column-wise select and paste in a plain text document.

Interestingly I don’t think I’ve ever felt the urge to do this for prose or tabular forms…

Never heard or noticed that distinction ... but from now on I'll start using "word processor" as a derogatory term.
