One of my favorite graves is of a woman who many locals presume is a witch because of the symbol on her stone.

She's actually a Mason's wife.

A little nun figurine with paint like blood on her face and chest. Next to her is a faded red rose.

Info about Ada:
Ada B. (Steadford) Armstead was born on Feb. 24, 1895 in AL. We could not find much information on her early life. She married James R. Armstead. In 1920, they were living in Mobile County, AL with their four children: Leslie, Athelee, Jessie, and James Jr.

Jim was working as a fireman in a sawmill. By 1928, they were living in Louisville. According to the 1930 census, the family rented a house at 1105 W. Jefferson Street in Russell Neighborhood. Jim worked as a sewer digger and Ada worked as a domestic. By 1940, Jim was working in OH and still married to Ada. She was renting a house at 420 S. 16th Street and still working as a domestic. Ada and her family moved frequently as renters.

In 1949, Ada’s daughter Athelee married Edward Graves. Athelee worked as a clerk for Southern Bell Telephone Co. On Oct. 13, 1966, she died at the age of 50 and was buried in Section B, Row J, Grave 1 of Eastern Cemetery. Ada’s daughter Leslie married George R. Hinkle in 1940, and together they had nine children. After their divorce, Leslie married David L. Kimes, and she worked as a pastry cook at Standard Country Club. On Feb. 1, 1978, she died at the age of 65 and was buried in Section G, Row 10, Grave 8 of Eastern.

On Aug. 29, 1988, Ada died at the age of 93 and was buried in Section 19 of Eastern. She was survived by her daughter Jessie, son James Jr., eight grandchildren, and 37 great-grandchildren. Jessie had married Robert L. Lewis in 1976 and worked for the Housing Authority. James was an Army veteran and former Negro Baseball League player. In her lifetime, Ada was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 121, Paramount Temple of Elks Lodge, and Consolidated Lodge of Odd Fellows. Her headstone features the five-pointed star emblem of the Order of the Eastern Star with an epitaph “I’ll live again,” symbolizing life after death.

The star on Ada’s headstone is also on others in the cemetery, which are vandalized as “witches graves.” It is frustrating to see this vandalism. These are women with loved ones who still visit their graves and find this offensive.

My understanding from the tour there was that her hub was the mason, but maybe some of the other family members were also.
