Google's I/O AI/LLM capabilities were much more impressive than the OpenAI one. Especially those parts devoted to helping people with disabilities. Actual useful contribution.

President of USA is directing increases in tariffs across strategic sectors such as steel and aluminum, semiconductors, electric vehicles, batteries, critical minerals, solar cells, ship-to-shore cranes, and medical products. The tariff rate on semiconductors will increase from 25% to 50% by 2025.

Chinese companies will soon be able to build humanoid robots on a massive scale. Today costing $14,000, will be even cheaper. They will be able to do more. I estimate that by 2030 there is no way to reliably equip them with weapons with significant effect https://twitter.com/xuxin_cheng/status/1789918278095151534/video/1

Twitter/X won in Australian court. Australian internet regulator cannot force a web platform to censor content outside Australia (which would be a kind of a precedent, for others to see, too). https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-05-13/musk-s-x-wins-court-reprieve-in-fight-with-australian-government

Navigational signal (like GPS) interference around the world is a growing trend. Primarily driven by the desire to protect military targets. Drones and guided weapons rely on it. It impacts civilian uses. If "defensive military purposes" - are the 'lawful/legal' justification/disclaimer, what then? https://www.ft.com/content/be9393db-cd63-4141-a4c8-c16b4fe1b6b0

Apple is implementing Adblock+ in iOS. Ability to remove specific parts of websites, including ads. AdTech bros are unhappy. By the way, doing this automatically with AI was pretty tricky those 5 years ago when I was exploring it. https://www.ft.com/content/c6dcbe7b-eaf0-41d1-adb4-f9a68542e2cb

Chrome with AI features can write in the name of the user, considering the topic of the website. Doesn't it risk averaging how text is written everywhere? Soon, lots of texts attributed to humans will actually be written automatically by AI. Problem? https://blog.google/products/chrome/google-chrome-generative-ai-development-/

Apple really worked hard to make video files created with iMovie unusable. Few minute recording having hundreds of MBs. Obviously all it takes is to transfer it to a computer and reduce the bloated size with ffmpeg. Too bad iPhones, or even default Macs, are unable to do this.

OpenAI reportedly plans to announce its artificial intelligence-powered search product (or something like that: “enables ChatGPT to pull in direct information from the Web and include citations”), in direct competition with search hegemon Google. One day prior to Google’s I/O conference. To succeed in Big Tech one needs a core product, user base, hardware, money.

"The theft-prevention system installed in Seattle rental cars by a car-sharing company was designed to prevent cars being towed away by thieves. It disabled the cars remotely if they were detected to be moving with the engine off. Renters taking the boat ferry found themselves unable to restart their cars when the ferry docked. An anti-theft system in a car caused major delays to a regional ferry system" https://www.ft.com/content/178ab808-21ff-4ac2-a81f-f831326c22d4

Exaggerating the effects of foreign influence campaigns serves only the foreign operatives.

Downplaying the threat of foreign disinformation campaigns risks making it easier for bad actors to take advantage of an unprepared public.
Overstating the power of propaganda risks amplifying not only the original falsehood, but also an even more corrosive and polarizing narrative—that politicians are somehow remote-controlled, and that citizens don’t have agency.
