As a follow-up to this story, I completely missed that the M4 iPad Pro now supports AV1 hardware-accelerated decoding.

I turned it on, and wow – it improved a setup that was already quite impressive. My RTX 4090 sending an AV1-encoded 4K HDR stream to the M4 iPad Pro = streaming bliss.

If you have a 40-series GPU and a new iPad Pro, turn on AV1 in Moonlight immediately.

@viticci i noticed something while listening to the latest episode of Remaster.

You might not have to keep the tv/monitor on all the time for Moonlight. My pc is connected to a LG C2, and I’ve noticed that I can have it turned off and still use Moonlight. The trick is there’s a certain time limit on how long after it’s been turned off that will last (on the order of hours for me). So, I turn my monitor (set on the pc input) on, then right back off before I stream.

@viticci something funny to follow that up with:

Occasionally, I use my 12.9 M1 iPad Pro with my dualsense via MagSafe through the ‘magic’ of the “Orzero Magnetic Controller Phone Mount Clip”

When balanced correctly (in such a way that the iPad is effectively projected in front of the controller) it can be quite fun, but it’s guaranteed to always look ridiculous.

@viticci When I got the mount for the controller, magnetic circles to mimic MagSafe compatibility for Android phones was included. So, after testing the fit between the iPad and my folio without removing the tape protector, I stuck the circle directly on the back of the iPad. My ESR case that mimics the Smart Folio continues to work fine with the circle on the iPad. I stuck one on my iPad mini and the large Pro. The mini would be perfect, imo, if it wasn’t for the screen tradeoffs

How is it that the Messages data store is still allowed to balloon in size until there’s no space for anything else left and the device grinds to a halt and refuses software updates? Because it forces people to buy larger sized iPhones and iCloud plans, sure. But seriously? This is with Messages in iCloud enabled. I shouldn’t need local copies of /anything/, certainly not 50GB worth. Where’s the ‘offload attachments’ option?

_RyanB,

@stroughtonsmith this is very strange as I’ve seen the opposite with iOS 17, extremely aggressive culling of messages information, though I’ve had similar ballooning issues with macOS. But it also seems like the size reported on the iCloud settings and phone storage are not the same for me, which is weirder still.

Though it shouldn’t be necessary, I wonder if stopping messages syncing and then re-enabling it would be a potential way to help (though you may have tried that already).

The Pro color selection is… not getting a good reaction from Tiff.

@marcoarment Personally, I like the blue from the promo pictures at least. But I can definitely understand why anyone would be underwhelmed at it.

Pedometer++ has 16 different complications...which means that in order for me to migrate to the new WidgetKit based system I had to pull out this little trick I learned somewhere along the way in my WidgetKit wanderings. Not 100% sure if this is a good idea, but it seems to work fine in practice. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@_Davidsmith woah, what? Variadic generics are a thing with this version of Swift and SwiftUI doesn’t support it yet, or is the issue even more obtuse than that?

There are some truly garbage TipKit takes out there from people who want to gatekeep user education 😅

Newsflash: your 'simple' app isn’t, to a good portion of users

_RyanB,
@_RyanB@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith Having a kid or two, getting out of my 20’s, and overall increase in self-awareness and concern for others helped me realize what a garbage take “simple is self-evident” is.

Yes, it may be self-evident within a certain/specific context. However, there is some arbitrary level of complexity where that changes for each individual, and the designers of systems don’t have any control over where that level is. The question becomes “who are you willing/able to leave out?”

ICYMI: Xcode 15b3 is out, and – hurray! – has removed the 10-view limit in SwiftUI. You can now add as many child views as you want without using Group 🎉

@twostraws Wait, variadic generics are here?!

I’ve had to drop back in following Swift news quite a bit, but this is one of those things I’ve been looking forward to.
