I'm not saying I need a new computer, but I mean it's still pretty close to my birthday, right...?

In a bid to avoid re-inventing the wheel, does there exist a PHP library to add ActivityPub functionality to an existing website?

There are a handful of 'concept demos' and even a few full PHP implementations of an ActivityPub server, but nothing (that I've found) that is just a drop-in component to allow, say, an existing website to post content / updates from itself.

ahnlak,
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

@andypiper @jtonline well it's @Edent 's excellent "ActivityPub in a single PHP file" work that contributed to me thinking that a (more library-ised) solution should exist.

I mean if it doesn't exist yet, I'm happy to build it but there's always a chance that something already exists that I've just missed!

ahnlak,
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

@gerb thanks - landrok's stuff was one of the first I stumbled on; it feels like it's trying to be the whole server, rather than coexisting with an existing site (although it's potentially a starting point).

It's also very... full featured :-)

I was thinking "drop in" like the PHP League stuff, which does one thing well and integrates (relatively) painlessly with an existing codebase.

ahnlak,
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

@mancavgeek it's definitely more in the right ball park, but feels a little ... abandoned (the last issue is from 5 years ago pondering if they should support webfinger...!)

I've seen it referenced in a few other places though, so maybe it's not totally dead...

Week so far - not bad… export exceeds import cost.

Update: with Sunday the week cost us 41p.

Roll on “summer”.

ahnlak,
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

@revk we've exported a lot more than we've used, but now I'm at the "waiting for paperwork" phase to be able to get any money for it!

OK I’m going to float an idea on here. It looks like we won’t be able to cancel a “broadband switch” from losing side. So won’t be able to do “anti slamming”. Shame.

But to switch using OTS you have to have a match on surname (using some fun, and vague, rules for accented characters).

So we could allow customers to set any surname on a line, and use as a sort of “password”.

After all, you can call yourself what you like, and we have to accept changes to personal information.

ahnlak,
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

@revk I'm.... hoping it matches on more than surname because that's kinda fairly public information 🤣

This bloody one touch switching stuff has taken me nearly a week now, annoying. But working out how it will impact the ordering process. Essentially it makes it worse! More steps, more info to provide. All to save someone ceasing some other type of service by themselves. But getting there.

What worries me is the ease of “slamming” and I gather we won’t be able to stop slamming from losing side any more, which is worrying.

@revk will there not be any mechanism for the consumer to say "don't allow a transfer without me saying ok" either?

I can understand doing something to stop troublesome providers blocking legitimate transfers, but as a consumer I'm rather in favour of locks to avoid said troublesome providers "accidentally" transferring me to them!

ahnlak,
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

@revk urgh. I mean it'll work I guess, but it feels like a most unpleasant hack to solve a problem that shouldn't exist.

My sympathies for having to work in such a daftly regulated industry!

ahnlak,
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

@revk which is how mobile number porting has (almost always) worked, and a number of domain registries too.

It's not like they have to invent anything new to do it properly!

ahnlak,
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

@mansr @revk I'm guessing that was a while ago - these days, you just text a specific number and it auto-replies with your PAC.

You gotta think...

If a star ship keeps its "number" when a new one of the same name replaces it...

Like 1701 -> 1701-A, etc.

That means they created 1700 star ships not call "Enterprise" first (after "NX-01").

Why would they do that?

What was the massive lul in ships called "Enterprise" caused by?

ahnlak,
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

@revk maybe when they switched to the NCC classifications, the Federation was big enough that Earth got assigned the 17xx series to name, and other planets got other series.

(*) I suspect this theory wouldn't stand up to any trekkie with deep Federation history knowledge!

ahnlak,
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

@revk in reality, I think ship registries are as rigourously defined to Star Trek writers as stardates are, so they just pick numbers that sound good.

Having seemingly solved the inverter issue (some config poking seems to stopped it objecting to our excessively high grid voltage), I've now entered the traditional phase of new PV ownership, namely that of "resenting that I don't yet have the paperwork I need, and am therefore giving the grid free electricity" 🙂

ahnlak, to random
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

Hmm. Ok my excitement over solar has been slightly tempered by our inverter shutting down because (I think) it doesn't like the fact that Western Power are shoving 255v down our throats.

This is going to be a tedious fix isn't it?

ahnlak,
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

Ok, grid voltage has dropped down to 250v and it's back alive again.

Hopefully the (so far very helpful) installers can figure out who to shout at 😉

Quick question for other solar panel owners - how long before you stop just staring at the control panel watching all the pretty graphs? 😃 ☀️

After years of saying "that roof is perfect for solar panels", our roof is now covered with solar panels.

I mean, they're not wired into anything yet, but they look very pretty.

@bexxi I am, of course, now resenting every last photon that hits them and doesn't give me free electricity 😉

So, someone, (who is welcome to own up up in reply), wanted to send something as some staff did a good job. We do try!

There are a load of legal rules on bribery, honest, it is mental, but we don't discourage small gifts like this.

The issue is what?

  • food? Is it safe? allergies?
  • drink?
  • stuff of value?

People have allergies, have food/weight issues, have alcohol issues, it can so easily go wrong.

I have to say "customised mugs" is the best neutral choice yet - well done!
