@russss Very neat! I wonder what the extra upfront cost was in time/effort... That also looks like a decent resolution!

It seems my new mainboard has some gremlins... specifically the onboard NICs are non-operational after a prolonged period without wall power. A brief (~5 sec) power cycle gets them going - totally bizarre.

Anyone else with a ASUS Pro WS W790E-SAGE SE? ... or ideas?

I'm in contact with ASUS first line support, but that's not fruitful yet...

@attie@chaos.social avatar

@penguin42 Both 10Gbit/s Intel x710 interfaces... the management / BMC is fine.

attie,
@attie@chaos.social avatar

@penguin42 Basically, I'm concerned that if the system ever fully powers off (i.e: UPS out of steam), then I may be unable to get back into it without being phyiscally present.

It seems that ~10 minutes isn't enough to present this issue, but ~6 hours is. Very bizarre.

"Without wall power" meaning PSU switch, or wall switch turned off / unplugged.

It's all copper, and during my testing and setup, the switch has been powered 100%, but the system is off-off while not in use - overnight, etc...

attie,
@attie@chaos.social avatar

@penguin42 Yeah 😢 ... step 1 is to determine if anyone else is seeing this too, and it seems there aren't many of these in the wild yet! 🙈

attie,
@attie@chaos.social avatar

@penguin42 Now that's the odd thing... pretty sure I saw this on Windows during early load / thermal tests (the NICs said "Cable unplugged" or whatever), and similar is displayed in the BIOS too... but most of my digging has been with Linux.

Both the mainline and Intel's out-of-tree driver show the same behaivour. Everything here is the same, but the first was after prolonged "no power", and the second is after a brief "no power" to kick it into action.

😕

Output of ethtool showing everything as you'd expect.

@attie@chaos.social avatar

@penguin42 I could certainly give it a go! thanks for the idea... will need to wait for tomorrow to try it out though

I can't decide...

Root on - data integrity, snapshots, send/recv, more complex setup, lower performance

Root on - more straight forward, higher performance

... thoughts?

attie,
@attie@chaos.social avatar

@penguin42 I particularly want to mirror and gracefully degrade... which I don't believe it'll do(?)

attie,
@attie@chaos.social avatar

@penguin42 Hmm... perhaps this calls for a VM to prove it out.

I've read into it a bit, and I thought it looked like there would be all sorts of hiccups and delays if one of the parts went missing / failed. Happy to be wrong though!

@attie@chaos.social avatar

@penguin42 This seems to reinforce my understanding of LVM vs MD for this use-case... interesting to see the note about SSDs here too. 🤔

Forcing networking in Windows 11 might be the dumbest thing I've seen from Microsoft recently. The second place medal going to making an ISO file that can't be put on a USB stick directly, instead requiring all the files to be copied to a partition that is EFI bootable, and (1/3)

attie,
@attie@chaos.social avatar

@soller This one made me chuckle just yesterday... Windows doesn't have drivers for the NICs on my new system, and the installer gave me an amusing "we need to connect you to the internet" page with zero options and a disabled "next" button... there was however a magical "skip" button hiding in the corner.

It then proceeded to pressure me into not using a local account - because limited experience, you'll hate it, are you sure?

Chrome is replacing the “lock” icon with… something. I don’t know what it is. Might be two people sharing a sleeping bag. https://blog.chromium.org/2023/05/an-update-on-lock-icon.html

@gsuberland @matthew_d_green I think we both thought of music, but perhaps they're referring to configuration / variables / sliders...?

I just found out the hard way that the bulge at the motherboard-end of the AX1600i ATX cable is due in part to inline capacitors... and I now suspect this is the same for the PCIe cables too.

Quite frustrating, as this lump makes them very awkward to deal with.

I honestly wonder what good they're really doing...

attie,
@attie@chaos.social avatar

@Specialist_Being_677 @niconiconi @whitequark yeah... it feels exactly like that - optimising to pass the tests better.

This is supposedly a "top of the line" 1600W PSU, so it stands to reason they'd play the game a little. I've not seen it on any other supplies, even the HX1000i I installed recently.

Does anyone else think of C structures as "templates" that you hold over memory?... Like a map you can use to read the data properly, and in a way that is completely detached from the data actually held in memory.

I can't figure this one from ASUS out... is it a licensing thing, but they didn't want to stick it on? 🤔

A closeup of the paper, which is actually a sticker, with text that suggests it's related to the presumably-AMI BIOS...?

attie,
@attie@chaos.social avatar

@gsuberland BMC isn't optional in this case... just intriguing that they include it as a sticker in a massive baggy - previously I've only ever seen it stuck on (generally the flash) or occasionally not present (though it may have just been lost due to not being stuck on in those cases)

attie,
@attie@chaos.social avatar

@gsuberland I went for the "Pro WS W790E-SAGE SE" ... happy to be advised otherwise, but I'm pretty sure it's just there - certainly the main SOC & RAM are populated.

attie,
@attie@chaos.social avatar

@gsuberland You have to be so careful with that stuff... the W-2400 series processors in this board are severly limited.

Only four of the seven PCIe x16 slots will work.
Only one of the three M.2 sockets will work, and it's via the W790 chipset.

I can't quite figure out if it might be fun to do this computer build as a live stream... would anyone be interested in joining me?

It's an LGA4677 / Intel Xeon W7-3465X, so the processor install alone might be quite an interesteing procedure for anyone who's not seen that sort of thing before. (I've certainly not done it before!)

If I do this live, then it might be quite short notice and/or in multiple sesssions, depending on spoons.

attie,
@attie@chaos.social avatar

@penguin42 These processors with carrier frames are really intriguing... I'd love to understand the mechanical rationale behind it.

attie, to random
@attie@chaos.social avatar

So, uhh... starting to get nervous about installing this new processor. Intel call for 8 in-lb, which seems to be a silly small torque, and is off the bottom of most scales. Any ideas? (LGA4677)

Also, both the processor and motherboard are surprisingly huge and heavy.

... what have I got myself into. 🙈

attie,
@attie@chaos.social avatar

@scy Oof, no... I promise to leave my "real" torque wrench in the garage 🙈
