Thanks! I bought my first Game Boy in 1990 and have been in love with it ever since. Consoles came and went but all I pretty much every bought games for and played was the Game Boy. I started collecting more over the past few years, any games that I missed out on and especially some hidden gems from Japan.

I’m very picky about which homebrew games I get. Also, I only buy cartridges authorized by the game developer themselves. :)

  • Big2Small by mdsteele, an original turn based puzzle, very clever and incredibly polished.
  • Black Castle by 7FH, an action platformer similar to Batman: The Video Game. It’s one of my favorites, it’s short, simple, and so much fun!
  • Dangan GB by snorpung, a bullet hell (yes) boss rush game for Game Boy.
  • Ice Cream Castle by David Couzelis (that’s me, lol), a VERY tiny game made from scratch in assembly language.
  • Ninja Twins by Mackerel Interactive, a turn based puzzle game, very polished, very clever, and very cute.
  • Pineapple Kid by MHZ Games, an action puzzle game, quite relaxing and fun, doesn’t take too much brain power (at least, not yet).
  • Retroid by Jonas Fischbach, a polished little Arkanoid clone, I can only get anywhere in it by using the 99 lives code.

I WISH I could get Sam Mallard on cartridge, also by snorpung, but there’s no official copies for sale. Really, anything by snorpung and nordloef (composer) is going to be top notch. :)

Haha I didn’t think about that! Yeah, left to right, front to back. :)

Please see my other comment about the homebrew games!

Thanks! Do you have a favorite game? :)

FYI snorpung releases all of his game ROMs free to play. :)

And thanks! It was slow going, but there’s something about being SO CLOSE to the hardware that just feels really good.

Do you have an example of what you mean by your question? I’ve never played the game before.

Wait, so the player in that video is literally clicking random squares until the game says the device is hacked??

It’s a homebrew game, right? What do you do in it?

I’m jealous! I’m waiting for The Guardian Legend for NES to come in the mail and I’ve been hunting around for a cheap or free little CRT to play it on, but no luck. 😭

That’s so fun!

By the way I recently played through both CD-i games, Faces of Evil and Wand of Gamelon, and I legit LOVE them. Once I understood the controls and the gameplay that the developers were going for it all just kind of clicked. If you have any interest in giving them a real try, I recommend downloading the remastered versions for PC and checking them out. :)

This sounds like a fun project! :) I’ve only played one game in this genre, Cave Noire for Game Boy. It has randomly generated dungeons. It’s turn based. There’s no stats to level up, instead the player just has to improve their own gameplay strategy. There’s 40 stages (to put it simply), each getting a little harder. After you beat a stage the game saves and you never have to play that one again. How would you classify it?

I use Lemuroid, an open source front end for RetroArch. It is dead simple to use, just point it to the ROMs folder on your phone, tap the game you want to play, and it all just works!

Nope, I haven’t had any issues with save states. Keep in mind, there’s a difference between saving the state manually and the option to auto save state when you leave the app. If you force quit Lemuroid or whatever goes wrong as you leave the app, the auto state save might not work. That’s my best guess. I usually do both, save state myself, and rely on the auto save state. :)

Ohhhh I got you. I’m not sure. In other emulators (on computer) I’ve seen that save states don’t actually save to the drive until you quit the emulator, so maybe something similar happened here?

I think most Game Boy games fit in that category, due to the nature of the portable system.

Is there a specific genre you’re interested in? Do you care about cartridge cost?

what's your favorite Gameboy game that isn't Pokemon or Mario?

I've just rediscovered my childhood Gameboys, I grew up in the 90s and had an original, a color, an advance and an sp. My game collection has whittled down over the year to the usual suspects, Pokemons, Zelda's, Mario's and some other standards. But I want to dive into some games that 7 year old me would have brushed over. So...

  • Metroid II is one of my favorite games of all time.
  • Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge and Operation C are both highly polished and fun, but quite challenging.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fall of the Foot Clan is a relatively easy, short, polished action game.
  • Kirby's Dream Land is my favorite game in the series. And if you think it's too easy, turn on Extra Game mode. It will wreck you, I promise. ;)
  • Ninja Gaiden Shadow and Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge are amazingly polished challenging but fair action games.

Every game I mentioned has excellent music, is an original game (not a port), and I have played in their entirety again and again throughout the years.

Let me know if you're looking for a genre other than an action game. XD

Oh wow. That was a really interesting read. I hadn’t heard of that YouTube channel before.

I like to post the occasional video game review on YouTube, but that’s just because I enjoy talking about video games. I work really hard to form an opinion with reasons to back up each point I make. If I’m undecided on something or am purely speculating, I’ll clearly state that. My goal is for the viewer to calmly think, huh, even though I may or may not agree, I understand his point.

I didn’t realize these kinds of things were happening in YouTube videos. It makes sense. Outrage sells so well on news channels and news websites for adults interested in current events, so it would also be aimed at other demographics.

I used to watch Zero Punctuation until I realized, even though the videos are entertaining, they’re kind of empty of any deep thought. Maybe it’s a similar situation?

I’ll keep it in mind as my kids grow up and watch more and more stuff like this.
