@hitstun just wanted to check with you as I think I misunderstood your request for a CSS var for color scheme. Do you mean you'd like something like class=theme--scheme-[light/dark] on the body class? For instance when the user selects tokyo night, solarized dark, dark, kbin it's theme--scheme-dark and when light or solarized light, theme--scheme-light to save you from having to type out selectors for each theme?

And I did investigate the magazine description federation issues. Think I have an idea, I'll make an issue for it and it will probably be the next thing I work on after my current open PRs.

@e@kbin.run Yeah, something like that. I'm sure some Mbin instances will want to create their own themes in addition to the six default ones. If each new theme sets either theme--scheme-dark or theme--scheme-light, they'd be compatible with any magazine-specific CSS that uses them.

I was also thinking about making the themes set their colors in RGBA format like rgba(253,246,227,1) instead of hex like #fdf6e3. That way, we can set alpha values for cool transparent backgrounds and gradients. But I guess if I really wanted to, I could write JavaScript that make that conversion for me. I keep forgetting that there's magazine-specific JavaScript too.

@e@kbin.run Ah, that makes sense now. I wondered why the Solarized theme has a light background on my desktop but a dark background on my phone. Those match my dark mode preferences on those browsers. I thought I messed up my CSS somewhere.

On this day 25 years ago, Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones became the first to fly non-stop around the world in a balloon. They suffered multiple mechanical failures through their flight, resulting in a icy cold trip that was definitely not fun but historic for nonetheless.

By the way, how do you like my new two-column layout? Since we're very visual-focused, it makes sense to present Fedia's thumbnails at their full 380x380 size. I still need to make it look better on small displays like phones, and I'm thinking I'll allow more columns on wider displays. It's too bad my CSS doesn't federate to any other instances and isn't used when browsing by tag.

@e@kbin.run Oh wow, thank you! I didn't realize I had an Mbin developer in the crowd here. I come from Old Reddit where CSS is all we had to work with. People pull off some sorcery with CSS, such as /r/GlobalOffensive's and /r/LeaguePBE's sidebar craziness and /r/AdamNeely's transparent background. It's a shame my CSS doesn't federate to other instances, so it's only possible to see it on my own instance.

A few things would help, though:

  • Add magazine panel options to display thumbnails at their full size, which on Fedia is 380x380, togglable for the main page and for all article pages
  • Make article pages download the attached image automatically and replace the thumbnail with the full image when loaded
  • Fix formatting of the magazine description so the line breaks federate to other instances
  • Get article badges working like Reddit post flairs
  • Add a magazine panel option to allow multiple columns and specify the maximum columns allowed
  • Throw an appropriate error message if an image I'm uploading is too large, which on Fedia is 6,000,000 bytes
  • Add a CSS variable for if we're currently in a dark mode
  • Write theme colors in RGBA instead of Hex so CSS writers can do math with those colors
  • Add a user option to restrict text string searches and tag searches to one magazine or all federated magazines

...That ended up being more than a few ideas. I should quit being lazy and make GitHub issues for some of these.

@melroy Because of using some very generic tags on your magazine as featured tags, this microblog gets filled with unrelated things.

hitstun,
@hitstun@fedia.io avatar

@vintprox My @FloatingIsFun replaced with for this reason. It was pulling in every space-related post in the Fediverse, which is cool, but most of them don't fit the magazine's theme.

I realize that by using the tag a lot, I've basically hijacked the tag for my own community's use. I wish I had an equivalent to Reddit's filtering by post flairs without having to dominate entire tags.

    @e569668 Wow, that worked! Thank you! Click here to turn off "Show thumbnails". I wish I could delete my thread that's causing error 500 on every page where the thumbnail would appear. But when I try to delete it, I get an error 500 there too and the thread isn't deleted.

    hitstun,
    @hitstun@fedia.io avatar

    @Pauliehedron @e569668 Well, it's a little better. The thread with the broken thumbnail image no longer produced a 500 Server error, so I was able to delete it. The /m/FloatingIsFun microblog still only returns 500 Server errors, and since that's the interface we use to write new microblog posts, I can't write them anymore.

    hitstun,
    @hitstun@fedia.io avatar

    @e569668 @Pauliehedron I wrote a microblog post with that link to test it. The magazine's full microblog on Fedia still gives 500 Server errors, but I can read the individual post on Fedia with a link., I can also read the post on Kbin.social and on Lemmy. It was worth a shot.

    @Pauliehedron Holy crap, @melroy fixed it! I wondered why my profile started working again. I had no idea Jerry was about to give up on kbin, but we're now running Melroy's fork of kbin! Hail mbin!

    @djranmas Hey Ranma, guess what? This is currently the only post on !AnimeGirls Kbin magazine. @Supersonic made dozens of throwaway Kbin magazines that pull random stuff from hashtags on the Fediverse. Since you tagged this , it got rolled up into all the Kbin magazines that have it as a tag. They're not all this bad, though. We're pretty much replacing Reddit.

    I'm posting too much. I never wanted to take over people's /all pages with floaty things, but it's happening and I don't know why. I only wanted /m/FloatingIsFun to contain all the content from /r/FloatingIsFun from the start, but it isn't worth continuing to bother people who aren't into this stuff.

    I originally planned to post 10-15 old posts from Reddit per day until I run out at the end of July. Then, I go back to my old 1 post every 2 days or so.

    But since I'm only one year behind at this point, I could change to this plan:

    Post about 1 per day for 1 year, roughly alternating between new content and old content Reddit had one year prior. Then, go to my old 1 post every 2 days or so.

    To help me decide, please vote in this Strawpoll. It closes in about 24 hours.

    @hitstun@fedia.io avatar

    @Candelestine Ha! I wish I could set up these posts with a bot, but Kbin didn't have an APi yet. I'm doing all these reposts manually, but since I've already written them on Reddit, it only takes a couple minutes per post. These reposts only happen when I'm at the computer doing rapid-fire copy-and-pasting and small tweaks to make the Markdown Kbin-compatible.

    But yeah, I'll need to figure out why Lemmy thinks all my posts are from 2 hours into the future. Is it like that with all Kbin magazines on Lemmy? I don't want to bother Kbin's devs with this if it only affects my posts.

    hitstun, (edited )
    @hitstun@fedia.io avatar

    @Madbrad200 @Candelestine OK, I've raised the issue in kbinMeta I should also check the GitHub project to see if there's a formal way to report bugs like this.

    Edit: It's likely a Fedia problem. I posted about this on @Fedia. Together we think that Lemmy assumes Fedia is sending a correct timezone, but Fedia sends a wrong timezone instead. I'll stop with the rapid-fire reposts on Floating Is Fun until this bug is corrected.

    Welcome to /m/FloatingIsFun, where we are easily distracted by things that float in the air! I'm Hitstun, founder of both this magazine and the original Reddit community /r/FloatingIsFun from August 2021 to June 2023. We joined the protests against Reddit's API changes that killed 3rd party apps. It appears Reddit is not going to back down, so we migrated to Kbin. For the next week, I'll be reposting all 400 content posts from /r/FloatingIsFun so this magazine starts with a complete set. Think of it as a New Game+. After we're caught up, I'll return to my regular one post every two days or so.

    Feel free to post floaty things you find as long as you credit its creator in the title, post a comment linking to the source, and follow the magazine's other rules. I'll do my best to make this a fun magazine to subscribe to, a collection of floaty goodness!

    @MHLoppy Welcome! I'm glad someone appreciates my CSS work. I don't think any resources exist for CSS scripting for Kbin. I've mainly just been adapting some of Floating Is Fun's Old Reddit CSS to work here.

    It helps to use your browser's inspector, which in desktop Firefox is Ctrl+Shift+C. It lets you see the CSS applied to certain elements and play with the currently loaded page a little bit. Then, I go into the magazine's Appearance tab and try to apply those changes. There's a lot of trial and error right now, and I haven't even touched the custom JS yet. I might be able to port some of the popular client-side tweaks into the magazine's styling for everyone.

    Feel free to look at my CSS and copy/alter anything useful you find there. I hope others can learn it and improve upon it.

    @chris Thank you! I wondered why everyone in /m/chiptune does Twitter/Mastodon-style posts rather than Reddit/Lemmy-style threads. I use mostly threads in my magazine /r/FloatingIsFun and I think it's much nicer to browse. My Mastodon account picks those up just fine, too.
