The problem with software developer careers: not enough on-ramps and too many off-ramps.

Behind my house there's a patch of lawn the council used to mow. They stopped doing it years ago, and nobody living on that part of the street sees it as their lawn and therefore as their responsibility to mow, even though they all complain about the impact it has on them.

And that, in a nutshell, is the developer training market explained.

I have to take my hat off to the takeaway delivery apps. They've taken an industry that was kind of working, made it more expensive for customers, less well-paid for delivery drivers, less profitable for restaurants, and they're losing $billions.

When I was a kid, I used to assume that whatever the problem in the world, smart people somewhere were figuring out a solution.

Now that I'm a grown-up (well, more grown-up) I realise that, yes, smart people somewhere really are figuring out a solution, while rich and powerful people are figuring out ways to shut them up.

Yes, those seem like legit replies.

Take my money!!!

Hmmm. So, a UK company. One of the directors has a run of dissolved companies with "QA" in the name. Most lasted 1-2 years before being wound up, and a new one incorporated.

He was appointed a director of the first one at age 21.

jasongorman,
@jasongorman@mastodon.cloud avatar

@sleepyfox Indeed. 6 companies in 8 years, 4 dissolved. And his work history on LinkedIn only mentions the latest one. He's a contractor QA, basically. Now why would a contractor get through so many businesses? The other live one is a sole director company, so I'm guessing that's what he contracts through.

@thirstybear @sleepyfox As a trainer, I could probably take a full-time salaried job and still slip in the occasional course here and there. I like to keep my options open.

A pretty depressing meeting with a marketing and branding consultant today who has a lot of experience in the tech industry. I'd been envisioning multiple "interfaces" to my business, tailored for multiple audiences - developers, engineering leaders, executive management, founders and investors.

We drew a real blank on how to present code craft to senior management. The key incentives are misaligned.

jasongorman,
@jasongorman@mastodon.cloud avatar

@carlcm The consultant's research suggested that the C-suite generally doesn't care about the strategic view. They care about the current financial cycle, their bonus and the share price.

When I see posts aimed at managers encouraging them to empower their dev teams, words like "let", "allow" and "give" perhaps point to the underlying problem.

I suspect OpenAI are going to delay GPT-5's release as long as they can, and milk GPT-4 for everything they can get. I'm guessing GPT-5 will blow their growth story and pop the bubble.

jasongorman,
@jasongorman@mastodon.cloud avatar

They went from GPT-1 to GPT-4, then GPT-4 Turbo, and now GPT-4o.

I'm guessing maybe that what's happening with GPT is what we saw with text-to-image generative transformers. e.g., Midjourney has pivoted to new features because improving the performance of the core model is now bringing diminishing returns.

And since neither's reliable enough for most use cases, the next A.I. winter may be upon us already.

Reuse can come at a cost. Sure, it's duplication and "waste" for every house on my street to have their own vacuum cleaner. But I suspect sharing one between us might cause potentially bigger logistical problems.

Search for "Certified Scrum Master" on YouTube. "When I found out there was something called 'project management' and then I found out about 'Scrum' "

jasongorman,

"It's called Professional Scrum Master and it costs $150".

"They're not called 'scrums' in the Scrum guide".

Really? Is that true?

jasongorman,
@jasongorman@mastodon.cloud avatar

@thirstybear Someone called it "faux Scrum" because the guide doesn't call those daily 15-minute meetings "scrums". I was pretty sure it was named after them. But I haven't read the Scrum guide for more than 20 years.

Yes, Scrum Masters. I am disrespecting you. I'm disrespecting you to the max.

@wouterla When I look hard, I don't see a system. I see people selling a system 🙂

Being schooled in why conversations in dev teams should be time-boxed, by the "Global Head of Agile" at a company with 1 employee. (I'm especially impressed by the certification he's given himself.)

jasongorman,
@jasongorman@mastodon.cloud avatar

"When I was a developer..." Dude, we can see your CV.

jasongorman,
@jasongorman@mastodon.cloud avatar

@thirstybear I don't know what would posses someone to make that claim when their CV's visible and they've obviously never been a software developer.

An Agile Coach, of course.
