I like how so many people decry the housing crisis but will still turn around and sell their home for $150K more than it sold 3 years ago because their Realtor insists "the market can bear it" (enough people will pay).

Then we need to stop electing governments that don't do these things.

I have decided to use my Mac Mini as my main computer for most things going forward.

Will get a more powerful Mac Mini when I can afford it.

Windows 10 is becoming less reliable and causing me grief over time, and I want nothing to do with Windows 11 or whatever comes next.

Getting very tired of having to rebuild Windows every 6 months.

kevinlovestech,
@kevinlovestech@mstdn.ca avatar

@roberthurdman I love to tinker and figure things out, but Windows has becoming more unreliable, bloated, and I spend far too much time turning off things getting in my way. The upsell it ridiculous, too!

So much time and energy is required to make Windows usable at this point, including what I just did, which is reinstall using Tiny10 and Windows Toolbox. I still need some Windows programs.

MacOS still requires setup, and you can tinker if you want to, but the foundation is solid!

kevinlovestech,
@kevinlovestech@mstdn.ca avatar

@roberthurdman I should note that I had to do a LOT more than that today to get Windows "stable" and usable for my needs, including using third party paid progams (nothing new).

Decided to NOT use a Microsoft Account, which means you CANNOT use the Photo Viewer. The damn Photo Viewer! Using ImageGlass instead (which requires installing Edge WebView 2 apparently).

kevinlovestech,
@kevinlovestech@mstdn.ca avatar

@roberthurdman Tiny10 (and Tiny11) remove most Microsoft Store apps. You need to be logged into the Microsoft Store to download/update their apps.

I don't think it's about what photos you're viewing. That said, the amount of tracking built into the default versions of Win10 and Win11 is insane.

I'll say it again: it makes absolutely no sense to me, that despite some upgrades, our old house in rural Nova Scotia was listed this time for $450K.

A year ago it sold for $360K.

Nothing justifies that kind of a jump in a year.

Something is very wrong with our housing market.

Our old house in rural Nova Scotia now has an accepted offer on it.

Probably for the best, tbh. It's not great timing for us. But we had to try.

It's amazing to see the upgrades and the new owners better take care of it!

If I ever become rich, I will make them an offer they can't refuse. Until then, my childhood home remains loved.

@chris Have you done Walmart grocery deliveries?

How does one rate the drivers for those orders? It's not done through the DD app as a WM order.

kevinlovestech, to random
@kevinlovestech@mstdn.ca avatar

I will no longer be ordering grocery delivery. DoorDash drivers here simply cannot be trusted with those orders.

It costs as much or less to get a cab and do curbside.

Apologies to all the drivers who follow the instructions, but I'm fed up.

At least point I am truly tempted to try to convince Mom that we give our tenants the required 90 days notice, and have them or new tenants live in the legal suite.

I depend on delivery, and I'm so sick of this stress related to it.

Had groceries delivered today by DoorDash. Dude can barely speak English, and admitted to being too lazy to read or follow the instructions.

"I always deliver to front door".

He couldn't be bothered to drive around back, but was willing to walk around the house a few times, up and down the hill, to help me carry them to the basement legal suite.

Repectfully gave him a piece of my mind.

Read the damn instructions. This isn't hard!

The homeowner of Mom's current house sit mentioned her Dad does "IT work" and wanted to talk to me about doing remote work. She introduced us.

In his reply, he's trying to recruit me for a couple of web programming client positions.

Not what I was expecting. No thanks.

One must appreciate the effort it takes to make and sell coffee or food at a fast pace and to do it well (and look good doing it), nor to pack and unpack it from home, or to wash everything on a daily basis. In this case, on her small balcony (with garden hose and drain, apparently) in Thailand.

So yeah, I hope she's getting all the tips.

The Realtor who sold our old house in Nova Scotia two years ago is going to record a house tour for us tomorrow.

Turns out she sold it in 2021, and it sold again last year, and is for sale again. Odd. Just emailed her about that.

Then I'll follow up with Mom and see what she wants to do.

No obvious signs in the photos of anything that's wrong or any red flags. Not a thing. Honestly nothing but upgrades and improvements. Flip-worthy (sadly).

Reached out a podcast guest about someone he mentioned who operates a non-profit giving computers to those in need in Detroit, hoping for an introduction. He obliged.

Now that gentleman wants to chat, and potentially be a guest on my podcast! Awesome!

Reached out to orgs in Canada and Alberta, too. I want to give back as part of my home business @kevinthetechguy.

In the immortal words of Red Green: if they can’t find you handsome they should at least find you handy.

New door hung. Took longer than it should have, nothing in this house is square or plumb. I wanted to buy that multitool anyway.

@NunavutBirder Wise words indeed! :)

I'm not handy either, but I seem to be useful around tech. :)

Got a phone call, voicemail, and text messages about a dental appt for today that I didn't book.

Called them.

"Well, that shouldn't be happening. We use an automated system. We'll look into it. Thank you for letting us know."

Second time this has happened.

Mom's current house and pet sit is using 4G/LTE cellular data for internet. Works very well in the city.

Managed to get her laptop and Roku with Plex working, but it's not letting me connect to her Pixel 6 or a Wyze Cam.

Port forwarding isn't working at all.

Just get regular internet, people. Please.
