kewjo,

it’s great for applications that are notorious for requiring specific versions of libraries and can cause dependency hell. moves unnecessary system dependencies into a sandbox. for me this means i don’t have to enable multilib to install Steam and pull in 32 bit libraries on my root.

while it does take a lot of disc space it doesn’t duplicate dependencies in most cases. i would say you receive some good benefits at the cost of a bit more disc space, such as increased security, easy installs, explicit app permissions. it’s great for when you have to install a proprietary tool in that you gain control of what it’s allowed to access.

kewjo,

generally you need to put your bios into secure boot “setup mode”, this changes based on bios but generally requires wiping any keys already enrolled. once you are in setup mode you can boot into your install. depending on your distro you can then sign your kernel+modules and update the tpm. arch wiki has a good guide. also beware each time you update your kernel you need to resign kernel and modules otherwise you won’t be able to boot

kewjo,

ichi the killer. couldn’t make it past the first few minutes

hard to tell, i think it could be a mortar. on the left one can be seen carrying a bipod and the guy infront of the tube carrying a base plate. looks like an 8 or 10 cm Nebelwerfer 35

kewjo,

for me the only way i can describe aphantasia is in terms of how a computer works.

I have a visual encoder that can store images in my visual memory but lack a visual decoder to be able to display any image. like if you could only open a jpeg in notepad. that doesn’t mean the information is lost or can’t be interpreted, just that my cognitive brain deals directly with the binary format. i understand the attributes like depth or color but if asked to recall something i can only verbalize the attributes. this means i can verbalize visual concepts and memories, but can’t generate or visualize them inside my head.

the chess example i wouldn’t even consider thinking visually to see the moves ahead but create a list of possible actions. I’ve always struggled with chess as i don’t have the ability to store the depth of actions available.

kewjo,

talking shit

Do you disagree Trump’s a rapist, because that was a court ruling, or do you just think that’s ok as long as no one talks about it?

kewjo,

depends where you live. i have some local brands that are really nice but due to their scale will only be found in a few counties in my state. most of the really great dairy you will find will be from locally owned dairies, the fresher and less processed the milk the better.

Fage would probably be found in a lot of places as it’s a larger brand and i don’t think they add sugars to their plain yogurt. main thing to look for is that it says whole milk yogurt and/or no added sugars.

kewjo,

given how many targets are supported by llvm there’s really little difference in cross platform support asides from building artifacts for the specific target platform. wrapping package delivery in a package manager removes the additional complexity to the end user.

kewjo,

State Senator Anthony Kern [photo], the bill’s sponsor, says the Ten Commandments shaped the country’s heritage. “Our history is the Ten Commandments,”

I’m guessing he’s never read the Constitution?

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

would bet money he doesn’t even know what the 10 commandments are

Evangelical app 'Bless Every Home' is mapping personal information of immigrants and non-Christians in a bid to conduct door-to-door religious conversions and “prayerwalking” rituals targeting them. (newrepublic.com)

It puts a lot of features at the fingertips of the faithful, including the ability to filter whole neighborhoods by religion, ethnicity, “Hispanic country of origin,” “assimilation,” and whether there are children living in the household....

i reported it as doxing, looks like they’re recording names and addresses. maybe those in the EU can raise gdpr concerns?

kewjo,

depends on the implementation, article states it’s based off the acquisition of fakespot which is trained to detect scams and fake reviews. if it could be expanded to detect misinformation that could be a really helpful tool depending on how its configured and information is relayed to the end user.

Mozilla names new CEO as it pivots to data privacy (fortune.com)

Mozilla Corp., which manages the open-source Firefox browser, announced today that Mitchell Baker is stepping down as CEO to focus on AI and internet safety as chair of the nonprofit foundation. Laura Chambers, a Mozilla board member and entrepreneur with experience at Airbnb, PayPal, and eBay, will step in as interim CEO to run...

kewjo,

Maybe they could white label a password manager (Bitwarden?)

not sure starting at which version, but in android you can set bitwarden as a default password manager system wide which integrates pretty seamlessly with firefox and other apps. only place i know bitwarden doesn’t really integrate well with firefox is on Linux but that seems more due to bitwardens lack of interest to implement freedesktop apis.

i agree though with additional revenue streams, they need to break dependence on Google search engine revenue. maybe spend research on alternative monitization to ads and sponsored content that could be implemented at a browser level and split revenue between browser and websites.

kewjo,

main difference is auto fill support and detection based on domain and/or application. mainly saves a few clicks and also prevents passwords from leaking through clipboards.

kewjo,

18 U.S. Code § 2381 - Treason

Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.

treason is more about declarations of war, a foreign party may be involved but it’s not required.

kewjo,

you seem to be blaming the workers for turning out flops but in general it’s the managements lack of planning and micromanagement that’s the general cause.

no one who’s a developer, artist, designer wants to add micro transactions, that comes from top down because it’s a revenue generator. they want to polish the games so they can be proud of the work, but are not given time.

executives are not the ones generally being let go and the ones that are will be cashing out from the acquisition. expect those IPs to get worse and have more enshittification because that’s what makes money and that’s all corpos care about.

you don’t get a larian studios from laying off talent, you get it from good management and giving your talent time to deliver.

kewjo,

could be skimpflation. company’s have been changing ingredients slowly to lower the cost of ingredients to save on cost. doing it very slowly over years they end up saving money and no one really notices the changes.

if you can find an old ingredient/nutritional list from a few years ago you can compare ingredient order to see if it’s changed

kewjo,

if you actually want to protect kids, this is the shit you form a posse to go protect right? for all the people worried about children this is where you would show up at the court and/or prison and demand their release?

kewjo,

Companies issue stock grants in lieu of additional salary to incentivise employees to stay. any impact to stocks would also take away money from labor.

would also open up corporate warfare to who can fund corporate espionage or politicians to close down competitors.

kewjo,

salsa is my favorite fruit salad though

kewjo,

honestly the statement “contains as much caffeine as our dark roast coffee” is misleading since that would be comparing an 8oz coffee to 8oz of lemonade. if you drink the coffee you’re most likely getting a cup that is 8-16oz. however the standard soft drink size is 20-30oz which would mean one cup is basically your daily serving of caffeine.

if i saw the sign saying “same strength as our coffee” i would assume it’s one cup of coffee is equal to one cup of lemonade. who would only fill their cups half way? it’s insane to sell one cup that is almost 100% the daily value while it’s known bad side effects can happen after 400mg.

Paradox of tolerance (lemmy.world)

Wiki - The paradox of tolerance states that if a society is tolerant without limit, its ability to be tolerant is eventually ceased or destroyed by the intolerant. Karl Popper described it as the seemingly self-contradictory idea that in order to maintain a tolerant society, the society must retain the right to be intolerant of...

kewjo,

tolerance does not equal free speech, laws or societal norms.

Long ago, blasphemy is a punishable offense because the then more religious society deems it to be-- many were killed.

would you say this was a tolerant society? do you think if people tolerated this behavior it would no longer be acceptable?

you’re free to say what you want but that doesn’t mean the statement is tolerant or intolerant, it depends on if you’re infringing on someone else’s right to existence.

kewjo,

Merriam-Webster: Tolerance - sympathy or indulgence for beliefs or practices differing from or conflicting with one’s own

you’re trying to change the definition of the word to justify intolerance based on societal norms. by your logic would you consider the Talibans oppression of women tolerant because the powers in charge say it’s the societal standard?

kewjo,

It’s a slippery slope because social mores are, well, social constructs after all

which is why tolerance isn’t relative to social mores. lookup the word in a dictionary, you’re fundamentally not understanding the concept.

Debate on tolerance and free speech should be thought more as a metaphorical court rather than a marketplace of idea.

why do you keep grouping these concepts together? you can have intolerant free speech, thats why westboro are allowed to protest at funerals. the point is you don’t have to tolerate that speech or platform it to a wider audience. In order to be a tolerant society the majority of society must denounce the intolerance.

Restricting women’s rights in Afghanistan is not up for debate

so we have established that societies can be intolerant. just because a society says something is acceptable does not make it a tolerant society which is what this paradox applies to.
