I don't like any tech company. I can't count how many times I've posted "tech companies are not your friends."

But I am really sick of the ideological blinders that make folks here dismiss anything produced by their chosen enemies as abjectly evil.

Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. But "fruit from a poison tree" is not an argument; it's a rhetorical strategy.

And by the way, you are always choosing your preferred "good" organizations. Think Mozilla is squeaky clean? How about the company that made your computer? Your phone? But whataboutism is also merely a rhetorical strategy.

Look, there's no moral consumption under capitalism, but that doesn't mean it makes sense to accost people for using resources that make sense to them, absent obvious harm.

It isn't technological purity or some high-minded philosophy so much as it is tribalism.

When people tell you they've found a thing that works for them or have shared a resource, consider pausing a moment before taking the tack of "Ew, $company." Perhaps instead examine the needs and motivations of the person who's using that thing, and proceed with empathy.

Many nations have endowments and grants for the support of the arts, like the beleaguered NEA/NEH in the United States.

Imagine if such efforts were adequately funded, and there were one to support the development of free and open source software.

These are the sorts of things governments should fund: loss leaders that benefit all of society.

The connection to Instagram is very odd. Imagine a Twitter user who wants to try Threads but doesn't have Instagram. Is there even such a person? They'll have to sign up for one before using the other.

Apparently a followers-only feed is coming but for now, the app appears to only make sense for people who have a ton of Instagram connections or are very interested in what celebrities have to say. As I am neither, the thing runs out of gas pretty quickly.

I think that's gonna do it for now. I don't like looking at my phone that much and I despise typing on it.

The app is definitely not For Me, and I get why people are scared about it. But I also can tell immediately that it is going to be gigantic, so if you are interested in the future the internet, it is something to consider.

The hype machine will launch it to the stratosphere, and brands people like will be there.

This community is like the exact wrong group to be attracted to it, but ah, let me put it this way.

It's the cool kids table. Maybe you don't want to be there, but the vast majority of people do, and they don't give a rat's ass about privacy or freedom or any of the other values folks who find themselves here hold dear—including me.
