For a while now I have been testing a @murena eOS phone—basically Android without surveillance. I love it. If you're interested, see the options available in the US here:

@sk @lukemartell @murena I have been testing the Fairphone 4 with eOS and it is fantastic!

ntnsndr,
@ntnsndr@social.coop avatar

@sk @lukemartell @murena I am part of the testing cohort, so I didn't buy. Service is as good as other phones I've had. Build quality is really strong. The built-in case seems to work. I've dropped it multiple times but no real damage. It is heavier and larger than I would like, but not so bad if you assume any other phone would need an external case.

I'm thrilled by the announcement of a new Membership Coordinator at @mayfirst: https://outreach.mayfirst.org/civicrm/mailing/view?reset=1&id=1216&cid=4757&cs=eea3a327247c8f7f4c3bbd8960aa303a_1686245408_168 At a time when way too many organizations are investing in "development" and cozying up to the wealthy, this co-op is investing in its relationships with members.

Next week, come learn how the emerging social networks (like Mastodon, Nostr, Bluesky, etc.) have different assumptions built into their designs: https://colorado.edu/lab/medlab/2023/06/06/open-social-media-origin-stories

Brought to you by @medlab!

I remember once a friend telling me that he'd written a book on a tablet (I was buying it from him at the time), and I couldn't imagine doing that. It just seemed so casual, like not-writing.

Now I am intentionally organizing new writing projects so I can do more of the work on phones and tablets. (Thank goodness for text files and Markdown.) I am still trying to figure out what this does to writing. Maybe it makes it worse. Certainly it feels more modular.

ntnsndr,
@ntnsndr@social.coop avatar

@robin Oh, yeah, that makes sense. Are you using digital handwriting (like a tablet thing) or paper handwriting?

ntnsndr,
@ntnsndr@social.coop avatar

@robin Nice! Those things seem fun.

My favorite reading/writing tool is the tablet Samsung made for B&N nooks, loaded with LineageOS and lacking any social media or email.

This summer, we're doing a series of events on —the new explosion of alternative platforms and protocols. Up first:

OPEN SOCIAL MEDIA: ORIGIN STORIES

@evan Thanks for this. I certainly have my own preferences about which kind of ecosystem I hope to see succeed. But these are all approaches that have generated momentum in diverging directions. Putting them in conversation based on that momentum does not mean judging their value equally.

Notably, we're not hearing from the Bluesky or Nostr commercial teams, but from someone involved in early protocol thinking for Bluesky and a longtime open-protocol person who chose to build on top of Nostr.

ntnsndr,
@ntnsndr@social.coop avatar

@skyfaller @evan I hope a careful look at the speakers will make clear that drawing equivalency between them and a conspiratorial attention-seeker is the greater mistake.

ntnsndr,
@ntnsndr@social.coop avatar

@evan No, I'm grateful to hear your reaction! I want to make sure that this event series is a contribution to our shared goals.

ntnsndr,
@ntnsndr@social.coop avatar

@skyfaller Right... I don't claim the selection is neutral, never did. The speakers are all really accomplished people who have engaged in these issues for the right reasons. You can disagree about their choices of protocols, but we selected the panelists very intentionally for their character and depth—and the range of protocols they are involved with. I own that.

ntnsndr,
@ntnsndr@social.coop avatar

@skyfaller that won't be an issue—again, none of the speakers works for anyone driving the development of the protocols in question. Velez is no longer involved in Bluesky, Rabble is just building an app on Nostr. The panel is really focused on the connections between personal history and design, not about duking out which protocol is better.

ntnsndr,
@ntnsndr@social.coop avatar

@skyfaller No, I appreciate it!

Have any educators here been involved in co-governing an OER project across multiple faculty or other stakeholders?

Thanks to @cfiesler, I’m on BlueSky. Finding folks to follow was much easier than Mastodon. But I still prefer the vibes over here.

But there’s no hashtags on BlueSky?! And there’s no regular meltdowns and other drama about it?

How many thousands of recriminations and justifications about quote toots do we endure every month ?

If you had to give up one basic microblogging affordance, what would it be? I’m ok with…

ntnsndr,
@ntnsndr@social.coop avatar

@bkeegan @cfiesler curious to see if Bluesky sticks for you. It has been fun but I have had near-zero helpful conversations there. It has reminded me of the value of the friction-earned relationships here.

All the complaints about Mastodon on Bluesky are exactly why I like Mastodon.

What is the best umbrella term for what is happening now? (Bluesky, fediverse, Nostr, Lens, etc.):

Alt-social
Fediverse
Metafediverse
Civic social
DSocial
Open social

What else?

ntnsndr,
@ntnsndr@social.coop avatar

@robin @smallcircles @trwnh I think a term needs to be able to distinguish from Twitter/FB/TT
