why is it that WiFi never works for me on planes, neither on my iPhone nor my iPad? I must have set network something or other on them … i get redirected from, e.g., connect.klm.com to this page.

RIP to John Barth, who was my favorite author when I was a kid (in a tight race with Joseph Heller). I loved “Giles Goat-Boy” and “The Sotweed Factor” — I read both multiple times in high school — and “Chimera,” which came out when I was in college. He was a really fun and inventive writer who left us a tall pile of good reading.
I saw 2001: A Space Odyssey the week it came out at the Cinerama (iirc) in downtown Detroit on a field trip with Mercedes Mueckenheim’s 10th grade English class at Cass Tech, then twice more that month.
I’m 14 and spending a Saturday afternoon at the Fifth Estate office on Warren and the Lodge Freeway, turning a crank on a Gestetner, running off antiwar leaflets to pass out at high school. The MC5 is practicing next door, extremely loud.
Later, I’m invited upstairs to join a dozen or so people including John Sinclair and a few members of the band, sitting cross legged in a circle around a lit candle, passing joints.
