OK this is low-hanging fruit but ChatGPT-4o (4o? what even is branding?) was demoed with a feminine voice, So HN discussed it. And a couple extremely horny users can’t stop talking about robot girlfriend sex and the end of relationships

the western world is already experiencing a huge decline in womens sexual appetites – AI will effectively make women completely uninterested in men

An AI girlfriend that isn’t going to bring up the last three time you fought because you forget her birthday/called her fat/hit on her friends? are you sure you understand the target market?

I guess I can never understand the perspective of someone that just needs a girl voice to speak to them. Without a body there is nothing to fulfill me.

And after that you have a robot that listens to you, do your chores and have sex with you, at that point she is “real”.

If you want to solve procreation them you can do that without humans having sex with humans.

… trying to view the whole universe as a big simulation …

Ding ding ding! We got another simulation hypothesis techbro! All who got bingo raise your hands. Everyone else, better luck next time.

If you’re trying to embed physics into computation, it’s very natural for you to embed AI into the physics of the world.

I can’t tell what this is supposed to mean even viewing it through rose-tinted tech optimism goggles. Embed physics into computation? Bro, that’s called “electricity”. Embed AI into physics? OK now you’ve completely lost me.

[noise is] also a problem if you’re trying to go low power on [illegible] computers, and so what these devices do they use the noise from heat-- the jitteryness of the elctrons-- as an asset rather than a liability.

But seriously what the hedge is he talking about?

It’s just some vague buzzwords about using quantum computing (edit: not quantum, based on the follow up video) to embed intelligence into the universe in the most efficient way possible solve unspecified classes of machine learning problems.

I now find that when I come to a problem’s conclusion I often do look back and think, “how could I have thought that faster?”

Unironically trying to think as little as possible

Is artificial intelligence the great filter that makes advanced technical civilisations rare in the universe?

This professor is arguing we need to regulate AI because we haven’t found any space aliens yet and the most conceivably explanation why is that they all wiped themselves out with killer AIs.

And hits some of the greatest hits:

  • AI will nuke us all because the nuclear powers are so incompetent they’d hook the bombs up to Chat-GPT.
  • AI will wipe us out with a killer virus for reasons
  • We may not be adorable enough towards AI to prevent being vaporized even if we become cyborgs 🥺
  • AI will wipe out an entire planet. Solution: we need people on a bunch of different planets and space-stations to study it "safely"
  • Um actually space aliens would all be robots. Be free from your flesh prisons!

Zero mentions of global warming of course.

I kinda want to think that the author has just been reading some weird ideas. At least he put himself out there and wrote a paper with human sentences! It’s all aboard the AI hype train for sure, and constantly makes huge logical leaps, but it somehow doesn’t make me feel as skeezy as some of the other stuff on here.

If a CEO emails some random unsatisfied user out of the blue with strong “no one must ever be unhappy” energy and they reply with:

I may not have spelled this out explicitly in my previous reply but I will do so here: I am not interested in getting more replies from you on this subject

Then the only even keeled response is silence.

Look at me. I am the CEO now.

Seeing how successful Kagi is when run by someone who actively sets their own money on fire for no reason almost makes me want to try and start a search engine company. I mean I couldn’t do it any worse right? And there is a market for it.

This starts out 100% indistinguishable from an April Fools post to the point where I had to check the archive date.

Actually looking back is maybe is satire in that annoying half-serious way (check out the nonsense hyperlinks destinations where the “humor” is a bit more obvious)

Also was I just shamed by someone who was in the environmentally horrifying bitcoin industry for keeping dry milk in my cupboard? No thank you.

SlateScott talking race and IQ: very cool and truth seeking. Revealing SlateScott's powerword: what's the public interest in that? (www.lesswrong.com)

The actually not even really a hatchet job NYT piece on SlateScott that mostly just called him a weird little guy has nonetheless created a festering psychic wound that oozes to this day. Here manifests as an interview with the author on LW. See also: discussion on reddit....

Oh great the newest use case for chatbots: pestering experts

"Why I'm no longer a White Nationalist." Neoreactionary blogger goes to live in Red America just like he always dreamed. What followed will shock you! (web.archive.org)

“Walt Bismarck,” a neoreactionary/alt-right blogger, decided to live by his beliefs and move from the liberal hellhole of Arizona to the midwest:...

sailor_sega_saturn,
@sailor_sega_saturn@awful.systems avatar

TL;DR: “I’m no longer a white nationalist because a lot of white people are cucked. Now my new identity is with sufficiently pilled white people. This is much more pragmatic. Also I would totally have a cool black friend if any actually existed which means I’m totally not racist.”

Also: did anyone else feel a chill reading about a literal nazi talking about how society accepts him now? America used to despise nazis and now they feel like they can walk around openly. It’s terrifying.

So today I learned there are people who call themselves superforcasters®. Neat!

The superforecasters® have had a melding of the minds and determined that covid-19 was 75% likely to not be a lab leak. Nifty! This is useless to me!

Looking at the website of these people with good enough judgement to call themselves “Good Judgement”, you can learn that 100% of superforecasters® agree that there will be less than 100 deaths from H5N1 this year. I don’t know much about H5N1 but I guess that makes sense given that it’s been around since 1996 and would need a mutation to be contagious among humans.

I found one of the superforecaster®-trainee discussion topics where they reveal some of the secrets to their (super)forecasting(®)-trainee instincts

I have used “Copilot” LLM AI to point me in the right direction. And to the point of the LLM they have been trained not to give a response about conflict as they say they are trying to permote peace instead of war using the LLM.

Riveting!

Let’s go next to find out how to give up our individuality and become a certified superforecaster® hive brain.

To minimize the chance that outstanding accuracy resulted from luck rather than skill, we limited eligibility for GJP superforecaster status to those forecasters who participated in at least 50 forecasting questions during a tournament “season.”

Fans of certain shonen anime may recognize this technique as Kodoku – a deadly poison created by putting a bunch of insects in a jar until only one remains:

100 species of insects were collected, the larger ones were snakes, the smaller ones were lice, Place them inside, let them eat each other, and keep what is left of the last species. If it is a snake, it is a serpent, if it is a louse, it is a louse. Do this and kill a person.

“But what’s the catch Saturn”? I can hear you say. “Surely this is somehow a grift nerds find or a way to fleece money out of governments”.

Nonono you’ve got the completely wrong idea. Good Judgement offers a 100$ Superforecasting Fundamentals course out of the goodness of their heart I’m sure! I mean after all if they spread Superforecasting to the world then their Hari-Seldon-Esque hivemind would lose it’s competitive edge so they must not be profit motivated.

Anyway if you work for the UK they want to hear from you:

If you are a UK government entity interested in our services, contact us today.

Maybe they have superforecasted the fall of the british empire.

And to end this, because I can never resist web design sneer.

Dear programmers: if you apply the CSS word-break: break-all; to the string “Privacy Policy” it may end up rendered as “Pr[newline]ivacy Policy” which unfortunately looks pretty unprofessional :(

"The Obscene Energy Demands of A.I." - hackernews discussion (news.ycombinator.com)

HN reacts to a New Yorker piece on the “obscene energy demands of AI” with exactly the same arguments coiners use when confronted with the energy cost of blockchain - the product is valuable in of itself, demands for more energy will spur investment in energy generation, and what about the energy costs of painting oil on...

sailor_sega_saturn,
@sailor_sega_saturn@awful.systems avatar

There are a few bitcoiners out there who try to claim, with a straight face, that more bitcoin mining = more greener.

As far as I can tell the argument basically boils down to “we’ll just use SO MUCH electricity that the utility will have no choice but to invest in green energy just to keep up” – but honestly I can’t make heads or tails of it.

“It’s unusual that something acceptable, if done once, suddenly becomes unethical when reproduced at scale,” he wrote on X earlier this month.

Ugh no gross. SEO grey goo is not “ethical” if done once. Do better. Do it zero times please.

This would be like saying: “It’s unusual that bitcoin mining, if done on a CPU in 2009, suddenly becomes ‘bad for the environment’ when done with huge numbers of janky poorly regulated server farms in 2023”

[Google spokeswoman says] AI can be a useful tool to help people with creative endeavors, including the development of great content

And of course Google is too high on their AI supply to do anything about it…

Vote for Sailor SEGA for president and I’ll install tiny electric shock devices into all keyboards to zap anyone who misuses devil’s advocate to express their own worldview at an arms length:

Many school curriculums teach that science proves that gender isn’t a binary and is divorced from sex, and they often implicitly (and sometimes explicitly) also go further to say that it is hateful to believe otherwise. […] I’m arguing the point, not my own conviction.

(later on)

I would not support the right for a person to select their legal classification arbitrarily though, it should be based on objective biological conditions, such as hermaphroditism.

I’m shocked. Shocked that the person who advocated for transphobic people is, themselves, transphobic. Well not that shocked.

No way man I heard the AIs were coming for those jobs. Instead I’m gonna become a prompt writing prompt writer who writes prompts to gently encourage AIs to themselves write prompts to put J.M. out of a job. Checkmate.

How it’s going: “Advancements in technology will allow computers to automate creativity freeing up time for artists to participate in menial labor.”
