Xenoblade Chronicles has been one of the broadly popular JRPG series as of late, particularly within my own social circles. I have heard mostly good things about the games, and some vocal criticisms about the second game in particular. After finally picking up a Switch last year, I have now made my way through most of the...
Happy to hear that Torna is a good game, Xenoblade 2 is my favorite. I think the best part of the Xenoblade games are the Titans. The environments are incredible because there is always a reminder that people are living their lives on a huge flying colossus
So, I’m a big JPRG fan and just playing through Mother 3. I love Mother 2 (aka Earthbound) as well. I love the music, quirkiness, style, pacing, simple yet rewarding tactics in boss battles....
This is going to be a bit of a grating answer, but, aside from Undertale which is a partial homage/subversion, the Mother series is very unique (on purpose).
You might like Live a Live if you want a JRPG. Otherwise, The World ends With You is a gamr that overlays a fantasy world over a seemingly ‘normal’ setting with a very unique art style. There are versions for different platforms but if you decide to play it you absolutely need to have a (3)DS
I love the original patientgamers subreddit so I was stoked to find this community. And because lemmy seems to have a more knowledgeable crowd any topic I posted here had great engagement and discussions, despite the small community. Yeah I love the fact that in this game, the message was just for the sake of it, while nowadays it would be in order to keep the person playing it addicted to whatever skinner box is integrated into the gameplay loop.
I decided to try this game, almost 4 years after the PC release and 5 years after the PS release. To me it felt like this game got released a year ago, truly a patient gamer....
It was my first game I bought for the PS4! I was skeptical because I am not a fan of walking simulators but the detective angle made it really fun! I was also surprised at how good the graphics were, it’s a darn beautiful game!
I want to make a case for Saints Row IV: it is my go-to relaxing game. I have it installed on my PS4. The game has a GTA-esque setting and gameplay style, but where GTA is a clever satire of the real world, SR IV doesn’t concern itself with the limits of reality: in fact, You play as the President of the US (with super-powers)...
Even speaking as a big fan of Xenoblade, it is a typical JRPG with an extremely expansive story. I hope you like it and then play the second part which is my personal favorite.
Lost Odyssey is a JRPG that started as a collaboration between Final Fantasy grandfather Hironobu Sakaguchi’s independent studio Mistwalker and Microsoft for the Xbox 360. With a script written by Sakaguchi himself, it’s a by-the-numbers entry in the genre but with an inspired idea to insert a collection of short stories...
What a fantastic write-up! The Xbox 360 was my first console, before that I used to be a PC-exclusives gamer. At the time the Xbox 360 was mostly known for shooters so I was surprised to learn that there had been a push to put some JRPGs on the platform. Eventually I got my hands on an X360 Version of Lost Odyssey, having heard that it is a much more accomplished title than some others that came out on X360 (like Blue Dragon). I agree with many of your points. But what delighted me personally was the visual design of the game. It was derivative, yeah, but it had such a great aesthetic that I still fondly remember the cutscenes. I love that JRPG era.

Older patient gamers: what is your preferred gaming platform?
I used to be a PC-only gamer but the older I get the more I gravitate toward very ‘simple’ platforms....
